Venizelos’s wife Mme Venizelos travels from Paris to his bedside.
Columbus January 31 report says 64 year old farmer Erle B. Gantz near Harrisburg, using a four foot chain, hanged himself to a barn rafter on his premises last night. Motive for the act is unknown.
Jon Columbus warns of no extension for 1928 license plates in Ohio. Secretary of State Brown will enforce the deadline starting tomorrow, moving to collect fees as required.
President Coolidge will not permit Secretary of the Navy Edwin N. Denby or Attorney General Harry M. Daugherty to resign amid the leases controversy. Senate leaders Walsh and Robinson were summoned to the White House to discuss the matter, while Secretary Hughes issued a statement denying cabinet consideration of naval lease legality. Latimer testified Denby sought to protect naval reserve oil from private wells.
William Dovenspike and Lewis Brinkley, both from Clarion Pa, were arraigned on forgery in Canton merchants defrauded of 250 dollars by issuing several worthless checks on a Clarion bank. Dovenspike pleaded guilty Brinkley pleads not guilty and bonds set at 600 dollars each. Police say the pair tested checks on each other.
Akron Jan 9.1 Sales of the B F Goodrich Rubber Co were 14 000 000 more than in 1923, the highest year ever, after a directors meeting. Net earnings were 3 000 000 lower than 1922 as profits fell in the last six months due to higher raw material costs and lower finished product prices.
George Linardos of 1917 Tenth et NB was fined 200 by Judge Bowman after police found 150 gallons of wine in Linardos cellar on Wednesday afternoon. The case was heard in criminal court Thursday morning.
Akron Ohio officials announce a near total shift from Northern Ohio Traction Co streetcars to 175 buses starting midnight Thursday. The move aims to move thousands of workers Friday with a double decker fleet planned and roads rerouted to Rubber City traffic, while 800 carmen face idle time.
Mrs Clara Rose 43 was killed in the crash. Mrs Minnie Grogan suffered a fractured skull and possible internal injuries while Julius Gruenwald was seriously hurt. James J. Davis secretary of labor and Judge William L Day spoke at the annual McKinley banquet pledging that the Republican party will clean its own house over the Teapot Dome scandal. Davis praised McKinley 25 years past and urged punishment for any violations of law in naval oil lands leasing. Kingston Jamaica January 31 reports after lengthy agricultural experiments the department has produced condensed milk for the war and supply product containing four percent fat one percent more than the imported article.
Joseph R. Milton, counsel for the Anti saloon League in Canton District, said he would confer next week with Gov. Doanhey regarding charges against Safety Director B. H. Curtis for failing to enforce prohibition laws. A Canton delegation led by Dr. A. B. Day asked the governor to review evidence and clear up the dormant matter for the public good and Canton’s steady enforcement of prohibition.
Halton P. F. Siddal, 26, son of an Equality banker, confessed to the murder of John A. Mazzion, 28, found slain in Duck Creek Norwood with a bullet head wound. Both seniors at Ohio Dental College. Siddal arrested at the YMCA last night, denied knowledge until detectives found a bloody shirt. Fraternity brothers say counsel defends Siddal and shields a girl’s name.
In Millville New Mexico county prosecutor Roscoe Ward says charges will be presented to the grand jury against 64 year old Benjamin Dickson for the murder of his 18 year old daughter Emma. The grandfather testifies that Emma died after an argument during jelly making and says the father admitted killing her and hid the body in the barn.
