A Canton police veteran A Lengel is appointed acting police chief by Mayor Curtis to serve until a civil service exam in 90 days. Lengel, who joined the force in 1907 and led as chief under Mayor Schilling, will oversee police and vice operations as the department awaits formal changes.
Washington grieves as the federal grand jury led by District Attorney Peyton Gordon opens an inquiry into who is responsible for the Knickerbocker theater disaster.
