Indirect statements from Whitacre after returning from Washington indicate he may seek the Republican gubernatorial nomination against Gov. Cox. He says a definite decision will be announced Friday in Canton, while noting Cox’s machine propels fear among potential rivals.
United Press reports lawmakers urged amendments to the anti trust law before the house judiciary committee. Rep Henry of Texas Rep Stanley of Kentucky and Rep Lenroot of Wisconsin spoke urging bold steps to define big business limits and exemptions for labor and farmer organizations as hearings on the administration anti trust bill continued. Tomorrow the house interstate commerce committee will hear corporation commissioner Davies on a bill to create an interstate trade commission.
Gov Cox and the penitentiary commission will meet to decide on buying 1448 acres owned by John Ellsworth in Madison County for a new penitentiary. The jury set the price just above $250,990, including $41,050 in damages, prompting Secretary Black to call the valuation excessive.
President McMaster of Mt Union Scio college addressed the Central high school senior class on Thursday morning, delivering a talk to members of the senior class.
Mike McKinney president of the Standard Athletic Club announced plans for a February 16 or 17 boxing match at the Olympia rink featuring Eddie Murphy and Phil Brock in a twelve round bout. He said he would seek a permit from Mayor Stolberg and meet principals in Akron before Monday to confirm whether the bout would be permitted under law. The mayor warned the decision depends on conditions and stressed boxing in gyms or by incorporated clubs only, and that he is strictly against any unlawful show.
Fragmentary forecast notes indicate snow likely and a cold wave with much colder conditions. Several temperatures appear, roughly ranging from mid 50s to mid 60s, with references to Friday snow and local conditions.

The Ohio State Society in Washington will mark William McKinley's birthday with a buffet supper and ball rather than a banquet. Associate Justice Day will preside and introduce four speakers Col Clem the drummer boy of Chicamauga Charles F Marvin John Bassett Moore and Senator Sherman Moore will speak on McKinley in diplomacy. The society uses the slogan The rainbow comes down in Ohio.
Canton marked William McKinley’s seventy first birthday with widespread carnation wear and reduced public ceremonies. Florists reported strong carnation sales while crowds gathered for reminiscences of the late president. A wreath was placed at the McKinley monument and a McKinley club banquet was planned for Thursday night with about 350 attendees.
William Ringgenberg city sewer inspector was thrown from a horse on Garfielday when it bolted. His right hand fingers were dislocated and he sustained a serious injury. Dr. E D Brant attended him.
Sealed bids are requested at the Stark County Commissioners office until 7:00 A.M. February 31, 1914, for supplying groceries to the County Infirmary. A list of required articles and quantities is available from L. Broner, Clerk of Clark County Commission. Advertisement.
The special grand jury finished work in the Luther case after questioning Mary Holstein and bookkeeper R. R. Barber a second time. It then began testimony in the C. C. Chapman case and heard L. P. D. Yost. Fairmount home trustees appointed J. B. Drukenbrod as Lupher’s successor, with ouster likely soon.
The service department has placed a first street sign at the southwest corner of Tuscarawas and Market avenues. It is topped by Lincoln Highway with Marketav and Tuscarawas-st printed below. Other signs are en route and will be erected promptly.
Mrs. Elizabeth Nelson pleaded guilty to conducting a rooming house where girls were alleged to frequent. Police Judge Quinn fined $100 and issued a 69 day suspended sentence on condition she close the house and leave Canton. If she reopens, the suspended term becomes 90 days. The judge warned others and called the arrest a warning to would be offenders.
Filippo Salvato a 35 year old yard watchman at Navarrest- Bo & O crossing was crushed when he jumped from a moving engine to flag an approaching passenger train. He was pinned beneath the tender for about ten minutes and died an hour later at Ingleside hospital. A priest, Rev. J. Walteisen, prayed with him and remained at his side until death. This was the fifth railroad fatality in Canton since last Friday.
After a conference with the board of health and Mayor Stolberg the county commissioners vote to submit at the next regular election a bond issue to finance a new jail. They will consider tearing down the sheriff's house and building a three to four story structure beside the courthouse, with upper floors for other county offices. A midterm education campaign will inform voters countywide about the jail needs using lectures and stereopticon slides.

The first toast masters club meeting at the YMCA was postponed to Wednesday February 11. A Friday meeting will prepare a program starting at 7 30 P M highlighting Royal Blend Coffee noted for its fine flavor.
Safety Director Kunkel expects a large crowd for the Muny dance at the auditorium Thursday and will station two additional officers inside. Attendance Tuesday ranged 2000 to 4000 as Canton youths caused noise in corridors. He warns parents to supervise and says unruly youths will be arrested.
An unidentified man dies near Maximo after a Pennsy flyer incident Friday at 8 p.m. Santos Rigillo dies near Carnahaway after a Pennsy freight Saturday at 3 a.m. Gustave Berg falls from a trestle near Fourteenth Street SE Wednesday. Lavaru Zurgin killed near Stark siding Tuesday 7:32 p.m. Filippo Salvato fatally injured by a B&O yard engine at Navarre crossing Wednesday.
Special Detective Espanosa searched for Ruth Ensign 17 and Edith May 13 who fled Bethshaw home Sunday. They rode the eastern Pennsylvania freight system and entered B and O in Pittsburgh on blind baggage. A young man accompanied them. Sheriff Oberlin says if found he will charge him with Mann White Slave Act violations.
The mangled body of a man killed by a Pennsylvania Railroad train near Stark siding Tuesday night was identified Thursday as Lazaru Surgiu, 31, by Ars senle Grovu, a friend in Alliance. Surgiu, once employed at the American Sheet and Tin Pirate Co., came to Canton about a week ago as a tramp. The body will be buried at the infirmary.
Canton to organize an anti smoking league within a week led by John Wolfaberger as the Salvation Army holds a series of meetings at the citadel next week. Special nightly sessions, including young people events led by G A Griffith Nellie Powers Harris and Harris adj sept, aim to launch the effort and promote consecration on February 8.
