Turner Iowa police report six killed and fourteen injured when an acetylene lighting explosion wrecked a gym during a Turner Central basketball game. The hall collapsed trapping spectators while two players from Central and several McCann family members perished. An emergency hospital was set up and aid requested from nearby Grave.
Morris Knowles city planning engineer of Pittsburgh reports to Canton’s planning commission after 1926 surveys. He urges coordinated streetcar and bus service, widened streets, a serpentine road off 12th NW, a new boulevard from the Nimishillen Creek area, and a park system integration to ease congestion. The plan aims to bypass the public square and open cross-town routes, with a major emphasis on traffic separation and an open system of city thoroughfares.
Chief of Police John H Wise promotes a city wide campaign to cut auto mobile crashes by educating drivers and pedestrians. He cites 61 accidents in the first 24 days of January and calls for more motorcycle officers, better intersection control, and stricter traffic laws to reduce fatalities and injuries.
