The Canton Chamber of Commerce reports a strong year with about 700 new members added to reach a robust roster as it rounds out its eighth year. President T K Harris praises collective effort, urges continued initiative by citizens and partner groups to keep Canton growing and productive.
Police chief James Watkins subpoenas Mayor Oles as a witness for a pension hearing before a service commission Saturday. Counsel for both sides prepare evidence and witnesses. Mayor Oles says little and claims satisfaction with prospects. Eleven witnesses have been summoned. Caplan J. & McNicholas named as policing chief by Safety Director Hamilton.
Ohio region expected to be generally fair tonight and Saturday with some unsettled areas in the far south. Temperature change minimal with yesterday's 9 PM readings showing little variation.

In Cleveland on January 28 more than 300 priests from across the diocese will gather at St John’s cathedral for a pontifical requiem mass for the late Pope Benedict XVI. Bishop Joseph Schrembs will preside and deliver a eulogy while Monsignor T Co O'Reilly handles preparations in his absence.

Columbus Ohio January 27 nearly 600000 of state highway construction projects will be bid on at the state highway department here late today. Projects include three in Fulton county costing about 125200 two in Warren county at 165600 and one in ferry county with brick 207829 and reinforced concrete 119147. Officials predict low bids will be under engineers estimates based on two prior meetings this month.
Canton trustee A M Wise listed among new trustees for the Ohio Engineering Society as the group elected officers in Columbus on January 27. Robert N Waide of Columbus was chosen president with John S Leach of Brabenville as vice president and John W Graham of Chillicothe as secretary treasurer.

The golf course, praised by Donald Hoss, is near completion with play expected July 1 after a 75900 course construction cost and 61538 land expense. Authorities report extras on painting and decorating court house contracts totaling about 35200 beyond the original 5765 interior painting, with further rugs and linoleum purchases and exterior painting yet to be paid.
