Cardinal Mercier died in Brussels at age 90 after an operation for stomach trouble. He had defied German occupation in World War I and remained a trusted church leader until his death at 3 02 p m. His bedside vigil included the recitation of the Prayer of Bom, and his last words were reportedly a final divine wish.
A blaze of unknown origin swept through the LaFayette hotel in Allentown Pa killing nine, injuring fourteen and leaving fifteen missing. Guests leapt from second and third floor windows as fire and ice clogged corridors and stairs.

Wilkesbarre Pa Jan 23 Events moved rapidly toward settlement in the anthracite miners strike John L Lewis president of the United Mine Workers formally asked Alvan Markle Hazelton to summon a meeting of the joint operators and miners negotiating committee which had just adjourned in New York after failing to agree on a settlement basis Markle soon announced he would accede to the request and call the meeting
Cincinnati January 23 police seek a man who with two companions threw sulphuric acid at Fred O Rourke a local butcher on Gest street near Fillmore. He dodged the attack but his hat overcoat and coat were burned. O Rourke says he once rescued two girls from a group of attackers and later received a warning to leave town.
In Washington Dawes challenged the Senate to prove or disprove his claim that a single senator can block a majority. He noted efforts to invoke cloture to end debate on World Court issues and criticized failure to use the rule before Congress’ end, citing March 15 tax deadlines as a time pressure.
Charles Paysinger, 36, of Barberton Pittsburgh Valve Co., confessed to killing Sam Whiten, 55, Friday night in front of Whiten’s pool room. Paysinger says he fired in self defense after a man drew a knife. the assailant fled on a freight train.

Tom Smith, 27, colored, was convicted of second degree murder for killing Joseph Obermeier, a night watchman at a local garage. He struck Obermeier with a hammer, splashed the body with gasoline, and partially cremated it.
