In Chicago a large roundup nets 3394 to 3400 prisoners in two days with 1600 bearing prior criminal records. Oscar Monroe, 34, led a breakout in the bullpen and was shot after stabbing at guards. The mass arrest signals a strong stance by the new police commissioner to clean up the city amid gang wars.
