A 6 year old boy named Joln rescued his mother Mrs. Mary Brown from a blazing two story home after an oil explosion flooded the kitchen. The Arctic commission received an unconfirmed report that Capt. Carl Ben Eielson and Earl Borland landed near Anguema River about 120 miles from Cape North. They have been missing since November while aiding an icebound vessel Nanuk near North Cape. A search is ordered with dog sleds and airplanes from Providence Bay.
In New York a autopsy was planned today on Mrs. Harriet Adler found dead in the penthouse of Dudley Murphy the motion picture director. Police saw nothing suspicious and detained Murphy and John M. Barbour the designer staying with him. An assistant medical examiner noted beads on her throat suggesting caution in ruling the cause. Adler had been estranged from her husband Hamilton Adler a Honolulu vacationing bond broker.
United States visitors to Canada spent an average of 4 dollars per person in 1929, per the Royal Bank of Canada January letter. Total US tourist expenditure for the year surpassed 300 million dollars.
Lydia Ann Sheesly, 10, of Dublin, died at Salem City Hospital four hours after a truck struck her. The accident occurred in Canfield on January 16.
