Two munitions plant explosions within 36 hours stirred fears of arson. The Dupont Powder plant at Hasell New Jersey was hit last night, following the earlier blast at the Canadian Car and ... Officials begin an investigation to determine the cause.
In six months explosions in the Metropolitan district have caused about 38 million dollars in losses. The Black Tom blast at Communipaw in July cost 20.25 million and killed four people with 120 injured. Kingsland New Jersey blamed for 16 million in damage with unknown death toll. Hassell New Jersey explosion wiped out powder valued at 0.5 million with 2 million property loss. Deaths undetermined.
Officials probe a major blast near Kingsland and the Canadian forks that caused widespread damage and injuries. A smokeless powder plant suffered massive destruction with estimates over twenty million dollars. Residents fear higher casualties as workers fled amid debris and fire, with authorities restricting access while investigations begin.
Weldon H. Wells, 25, of Huntington Indiana, is held for first degree murder in Columbus Ohio for the shooting death of Mona Byron Simon 27 in the Hotel Deshler. Police plan to secure a governor’s requisition to return Wells to Columbus.
Milton Bejack, president of Alliance Tire & Rubber Co, filed an injunction claiming he owns a majority of voting stock but was ousted at the annual meeting while ill. Minnie Heimke was granted a divorce Friday from Albert J. Heimke of Ingramay SW on the grounds of cruelty. The court approved an agreement setting property rights and custody of their child.
Jacob M. Glaser filed error pro ceedings in common pleas court Saturday against Sam George. Before Justice Correll, George procured an order ejecting Glaser from property in Cherry avenue SE. He said Glaser procured the lease by fraud.
A Canton woman denounces anti suffrage pickets outside the White House and urges voters to be wary of suffrage tactics. Statements attributed to Mrs Ray J Bour criticize leaders like Mrs Perkins who advocate communal dining rooms and socialized motherhood, warning of negative effects on families and society. Dance Norwood's Orchestra advertises at Eagle Hall.
Congressman I R Sherwood of Toledo former Cantonian has introduced a bill in Congress to pension all destitute persons over 65. He seeks a $2 weekly pension for those unable to perform manual labor with annual income under $200.
Dr T Wallis Grose of the First Methodist Episcopal church addressed a Dalton meeting of the Brotherhood of the Methodist church Friday evening on the subject The Church and the Changing Order. A banquet drew more than 200 attendees as Grose stressed the role of men in the church movement.
In Dickinson North Dakota January 13 the man known as the man of mystery failed in his second court bid to prove he is Jay Caldwell son of a wealthy Taylor farm family. District Judge Neusale dismissed the suit after a ten day trial.
An infant about a month old was left in a lot behind 7th Street NE and Mahoningrd, found by a passerby who took the baby home to locate its mother. No police report was filed, and a second basket with clothing was said to be left nearby.
A 150 horsepower motor for Cook Park wells reached Canton and will be in service Monday, delivering over 1 million gallons daily. The repaired old motor returns Tuesday to Navarre Rd for use with a traction pump, boosting city water capacity to about 2 million gallons at Navarre. Workers fear hidden loot tied to a recent robbery, with further money possibly found as conduits are cleared.
Philadelphia January 13 The Thaw legal team mobilizes as Harry Kendall Thaw, recovering in St Marys hospital after a suicide attempt, faces extradition to New York for assault and kidnapping charges involving Frederick Gump Jr of Kansas City. Attorney Henry Scott signals a full legal battle over any extradition and potential insanity challenge in Pennsylvania. Leonard Williams says Thaw planned to flee to Bridgeport or Canada.
