The Ohio National Guard mobilized after a Youngstown steel strike riot with killings and arson. The Canton O N G unit boarded a special Pennsy train to East Youngstown, joining other regiments under Brig. Gen. Speaks. Federal and state orders triggered rapid deployment.

New York police link Giovanni Battista Attanasio to a year of bomb outrages. In his Bronx apartment they found 78 prepared bombs and explosive for many more. A bomb blast on New Year’s Eve led to his arrest after information from Giuseppe Carnau. Attanasio reportedly manufactured bombs for Tallia celebrations and sold them for two dollars each.
The national defense committee of Canton proposes forming a volunteer company of about 400 men not under Ohio National Guard, to drill and be ready to answer a call to arms. A one year enlistment in the regular army is favored to recruit young men and provide physical training. The committee, chaired temporarily by Mayor Stolberg, will report next Saturday.
Berlin says experts cannot travel to Washington to arbitrate the Frye indemnity dispute after a note to the United States outlining conditions for sinking ships. Germany agrees damages should be split but cannot comply with sending its expert, Dr Greve, due to travel risks amid wartime constraints.

Thaddeus Nighman, eighty five and likely Canton’s oldest native, died Saturday at his home after a long life in the city. A former city marshal remembered for quelling a riot and saving property and a friend, he lived in the same block where he was born and spent his entire life aside from two years away. He worked in brewing, city service, and later heavy hauling, remaining temperate and abstinent. He leaves five children Frank W Nighman and others, a stepdaughter Mrs Theo Hiller, and his widow Elizabeth DePeyster.
A drink crazed mob killed one person and wounded many as they burned the town. Troops replaced private guards in three regiments to restore order amid destruction and vast losses estimated at one million dollars.
