Honor for Theodore Roosevelt memory observed in Canton

Canton marks memorial tribute to Theodore Roosevelt with a brief interlude of manufacturing activity silent notices and half mast flags. The funeral procession is moving toward Oyster Bay as city buildings reflect the nation wide homage to the late president and his ties to McKinley.

Oberlin Killed in Action During World War I Armistice Day

Ira W. Oberlin 1312 Sixth St SW Canton son of Mrs Elizabeth Oberlin died in action on November 11 the armistice signing day. He served in Company C 312 Machine Gun Battalion later listed in casualty roll. He left Canton May 28 trained at Camp Gordon Ga sailed overseas August 6 reaching France by then. His last letter dated October 28 said German planes buzzed a small French town as they hurried along. A telegram December 28 confirmed his infantry death though family questions company and identity. He leaves a mother one brother and two sisters.

Canton Men in Italy May Get Home First

Canton soldiers of the 332nd Regiment now in Italy may reach home ahead of others. A letter from Robert Ballard to his father Fred Ballard notes the unit joined the band in Rome then moved to Naples for embarkation. The 332nd, once part of the 83rd, is now independent and was active in Italy’s final days. Colonel Wallace commends the regiment for bravery and handling unaccustomed duties as diplomats and fighters.

Mrs. Charles W. Zollinger, 35, wife of a Canton firm member, died at 1127 Piedmont Ave NE Tuesday at 10 45 a m from double pneumonia after Spanish influenza. The Cantons Victory Army of 1800 men visited every home between 5 and 8 pm Monday to explain the needs of overseas troops and the Victory Safe. No money was solicited. instead, participants discussed the cause and distributed Victory Call papers for awareness.

Roosevelt urging support for United War Work drive

The late Colonel Theodore Roosevelt urged Americans to back the United War Work campaign and not let peace discourage aid to the troops. With all his sons in service he stressed duty to veterans and the need to oversubscribe the drive to show gratitude and sustain organizations aiding soldiers at home and front.

Man Who Shot Roosevelt Praised Him Personally

John C. Schrank, the man who shot Theodore Roosevelt in Milwaukee in 1912, was photographed at the state asylum for the criminal insane. He said he admired Roosevelt personally and called him “the incarnation of a dangerous assetem.”

City water boss backs 5 million gallon pump plan

Waterworks Superintendent Louis Ohliger urges immediate installation of a 5 000 000 gallon capacity pump at the Harrisburg Road station to ensure summer supply. The $35 000 unit would be funded by a $190 000 bond issue, with potential July completion if bonds sell as expected. Five new wells may also be drilled at the site and related plans await water commission approval.

Canton to Add New Public School Building

Canton's public school system plans a new building with site selection in weeks. A resolution authorizes 162000 in bonds for the new school and repairs, to be offered to the sinking fund commission, then the industrial commission, or sold to the highest bidder at par. An investigation into conditions and congestion will guide the final site and plan with a report due next month.
