The Man on the Square denounces the county auditor’s office hours, urging that the auto tag department stay open until 5 PM to accommodate workers. He notes 40,000 Cantonians with licenses and argues courthouse staff should serve the public despite late schedules.
Washington police consider Dr Knute Houck may be feigning insanity in the disappearance of his wife Mrs Gladys Walter Houck Canton girl. A new mental examination at Walter Reed will determine if he is sane or malingering with Canton relatives present.
Prisoner Pat McDermott confirmed knowledge of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley A. Slagle and laughed at new witnesses in Cleveland. He refused to name the Slagles as harborage in the Abigail apartments, saying he would protect friends. Other inmates read newspapers quietly or remained unaware of disclosures.
Harold F. Webster confessed killer of his mother in law Mrs. Catherine Gallaway following a bitter dispute over money lost in a Florida land deal. Detectives seek motive. Webster, a former Miami real estate salesman, allegedly lost 5000 of his money and 1000 of Gallaway’s when the deal collapsed after a hurricane last fall.

Charles Swede Risberg delays appearance in Chicago as Judge Landis, aided by guards, reviews Risberg charges that Detroit Tigers aided Chicago White Sox in a 1917 sloughing of a series. Witnesses summoned include Eddie Collins Ray Schalk Donie Bush while defense contends Risberg fabricated the tale from a gift to Detroit pitchers and a catcher in the pursuit of the White Sox pennant.
Capt Clarke passed a comfortable night at Lakeside hospital and showed slight improvement. Doctors said he is likely to recover normal faculties within a few months after surgeons removed a bullet from his spine and report the spinal cord was not severed, though nerves may need time to heal.
Safety Director Earl Hexamer denounces Canton council for not amending the traffic ordinance to allow buses to turn right on the public square. He argues the centralized terminal depends on the current setup and warns four new problems would arise if routes cross the square. Howard Lehr, succeeding Hexamer January 18, agrees the buses must stay on the public square.
Five year old Onpsi Jones of Cincinnati died in hospital after being hit by an automobile yesterday. State authorities investigated the accident and the driver remained at the scene.
Authorities say Harold F. Webster, son-in-law, confessed to murdering Catherine Gallaway with a tool in Hempstead Long Island. He claimed she threatened divorce and interfered as he tried to remove his year old son from the Gallaway home.
Orville Knight a 19 year old known by aliases fled Massillon jail after failing to post 2500 bail. Arrested by Cleveland police December 2 for possession of a Packard auto belonging to Frank Snyder, he later confessed to car theft bootlegging and rum running during a December 4 hearing before Judge Arthur N. Kaley. Knight had no attorney.
Cincinnati police hunted two men after Miss Ethel Kendall 23 daughter of John J. Kendall Latonia Ky printed boss was abducted and then released last night. Charles H. Hughes 31 coal broker said they were held up near Newton a suburb and forced to accompany the assailants. Hughes reported the incident and Kendall was found at his home in a hysterical state.
Edward Braugher the new sheriff searches the county for four escapees who broke from the county jail last night. They bored a hole in the wall with an iron bar and slid down a 39 foot drop using a garden hose as a rope.
Luther Little an aged farmer in Cullman Alabama killed his son John Little 26 after a revolver duel. He telephoned an undertaker for burial and turned himself in to authorities. John had wounded his younger brother earlier in a jealous incident tied to a village movie excursion.
A satirical piece from Dodge City Kansas argues the United States is unarmed and unprepared for future conflict. It imagines arming the enemy with a “government booze” party before war and claims government stats show funerals per quart.

Stanley A. Slagle of 11612 Saint Clair Avenue Cleveland recalls meeting Ben Nadel, a known bootlegger, who sought a room for a fellow on a liquor case.
