Lisbon reports Portugal has joined the war on the Allied side. Officially 4700 more Portuguese troops concentrate in Angola to campaign against German forces, with first engagements yet undisclosed.
The U S government appointed Daniel J Keefe and Hywell Davies federal conciliators to mediate the Eastern Ohio coal strike affecting 15 000 miners. The Wheeling chamber of commerce requested federal action and operators met at the U S Coal Company office to discuss eviction of striking miners from company housing and reopening with non union labor with no decision made by noon.
Alliance City Solicitor Arthur W. Morris suffers a serious blood infection from a minor hand scratch. His condition was critical for a period but he is now recovering as doctors monitor his progress.
City finances remain strained as the finance committee reports a half year appropriation near 329 514 dollars, only slightly above 1914 totals, with 20 900 dollars in certificates of indebtedness from late 1914 and outstanding electric light bills 13 528 dollars. The committee plans transfers from the general fund to the safety and service funds to cover deficits, noting a 9 065.95 general fund balance. Councilman Schrantz warns of facing the indebtedness and possible July 1916 timing for some actions.

In Lemberg Galicia on January 5 the Russians clashed with three Austrian airships above Przemysl. Flying at 4500 feet the Russians dropped six bombs on forts at Premysl and disabled three guns. They intercepted the Austrians after passing the stronghold and damaged one Austrian aircraft while the other two retreated.
The Canton Sand & Gravel Co storage and barn on 19th Street NE near Supertoray was destroyed by fire between 9 and 10 a.m. Tuesday, with losses estimated above $5000. The upper half of the 45 to 50 by 100 foot structure with three lofts held hay straw and implements. Origin unknown, horses可能 risked, one horse injured on icy pavement en route.
Harry D. Hunton a motion picture promoter sues Canton city for 2000 dollars alleging breach of contract over venue use. He claims signing a contract to use the auditorium every Saturday fall through December and payment of 30 dollars per night, with city officials allegedly denying access in late period. Attorney F W Crankshaw filed the suit.
Canton boards decide future school buildings will honor prominent local educators. The Jacksonst building will be named the Ira M Allen building after Ira M Allen, Canton’s first superintendent of schools from 1849 to 1854. The union school system began in 1851 with a board of education elected.
A Columbus dispatch reports Governor-elect Willis plans to overturn non competitive civil service rules. He aims to replace officeholders appointed after tests and to loosen restrictions for subordinates in his own department. Only Infirmary Superintendent Fierstos is noted as a Democrat serving without a competitive exam.
Contracts for the infirmary next quarter were awarded by the county commissioners. Beef contracts go to Lee Graber for 20 000 pounds at 10.40 per 100 pounds and bread from General Baking Co for 30 000 loaves at two cents each.

The judge barred William Fowler from presenting what was called Obliger’s dying declaration regarding the Navarre road stabbing. Prosecutors must prove Obliger felt he was dying. court adjourned to Tuesday after funeral attendance. Witnesses testified to the fight and identify the involved defendants.
The finance committee refused fire captain raises and delayed raises for engineers laborers and storm water sewer workers citing a $2600 safety fund deficit $15 000 unpaid bills and a forthcoming eight to ten hour adjustment in pay once the eight hour law takes effect in six months. Safety Director Kunkel urged parity if seven captains are raised.
The Commercial and Savings Bank held its annual meeting to elect directors for 1915. W J Pontius joined the board, replacing W E Sherlock. Directors include Dr James Fraunfelter W W Irwin Homer L Rose Frank Paquelet John W A Staudt and F A Coldren. Surplus funds grew to 9000 after a 2000 transfer and undivided profits total 6000. Total business for 1914 reached 13 162 252.69 versus 8 400 000 in 1913 with 2500 active accounts.
Mrs. John Loftus seeks a widow's allowance in a dispute over an estate. The probate case was to be heard Tuesday but was postponed after M. E. Huth, administrator of the estate, broke his leg Monday night in an accident.
Voters in Canal Fulton cast a noon tally on the wet dry question with two thirds of the registered voters already in. If dry the town saloon closes. if wet the saloon remains open. The county elections office in Canton stayed ready to assist though no calls had come by noon.
Eggs prices ease as market influx boosts supply. Buying price falls from 40 to 38 cents per dozen while retail remains at 46 cents. Butter drops two cents to 40 cents a pound. Wheat prices rise a third cent to $1.23 per bushel on Tuesday market open.
The Young Men's Democratic club re elected President John H Elisenhour and officers. Directors include E R Sterling Thomas Whipple and others. They will skip the January Jackson day banquet and host a Jefferson day banquet in April per Senator Pomerenes suggestion. Also notice Lola the dancing girl at the Valentine.
A motion for a new trial was filed Tuesday in the case of W. J. Wasmer versus Massillon Iron and Steel Co. Referee I. H. Taylor awarded the plaintiff $91,006 but Judge Ake set the award aside.
Sheriff Norwood set a night watch in the county jail over George Sigbe of Alliance after an attempted self harm in the Alliance jail. Sigbe’s cell is left unlocked at night and a prison trusty is ordered to monitor him. He told relatives he is satisfied with his treatment.
Gottliebe Waschiwitz filed for divorce from John Waschiwitz but the case was dismissed in common pleas court on Tuesday.
The board of education took no action Monday night on appointing a building superintendent. The certified list of the top three from examinations was received but no investigation occurred, so the appointment was postponed.
Gov. Cox on Tuesday named Dr. D. J. Conkling of Dayton to the state board of health for the term ending December 31 1921. He succeeds Josiah Hartzell of Canton who died recently. Hartzell had held the post since McKinley’s time until his death.
Verna Battin and Ira Miller sue Harry Miller as administrator of Mary E Miller's estate to set aside a conveyed property deed. They claim James T Miller left each son and daughter a third share subject to a life lease for his wife and a sale restriction. They allege the wife sold the property violating the will and seek restoration of the property to the heirs.
Daniel Wertenberger filed an answer in common pleas court denying Elizabeth Wertenberger's neglect allegations in the divorce suit.
