Mayor Stolberg will read his first annual message to the city council next Monday night outlining city needs and urging action. He plans to request funds or bonds for jail renovation and may announce steps to open the women’s prison in the new safety building, with details to follow.
John C. Harmony, a board of education member, says he will oppose full payment of the Geisler Brothers bill for cheating apparatus at Garfield school. He demands a $10 daily forfeit from Sept 1 to completion and will seek who is at fault for delays that cost the board money. Louis Geisler counters that delayed brick foundation work blocked furnace installation and that the janitors and principals support this. He adds the firm may withhold submitting the bill until it is complete and will press for full payment.
Public notice lists teachers’ examination schedule with sessions starting at 7 p m on January 9 and again at 8 a m on the following Saturday. Details appear in a clipped 1914 issue with garbled OCR.
Miss Ivy Mountain a nineteen year old teacher backed by the school board and local supporters was ordered released on bail after a 60 day jail term. She awaits trial on charges of assault and battery and cruelty over beating J W Barger’s sixteen year old son with a rod and a hot poker during a disciplinary incident at Pritts school Springfield Connellsville Pa.
Democrats in Ohio press Whitacre to retract retirement claim while other regions discuss him as a possible U S senator to follow Burton. The Ohio State Journal praises Whitacre as a strong candidate though his return from Detroit is delayed and a meeting to push retracting his retirement is postponed until his arrival. J E Hurst says he will not decide on a run until Whitacre acts.
City Solicitor Ruff weighs the effect of ex Mayor Turnbull not signing the 12 30 saloon closing ordinance. He plans to issue an opinion later as to whether the measure was killed. Councilmen may reintroduce the closing ordinance or pursue a new one with midnight closing amid saloonkeepers and brewers pressure. Canton lodge No 60 to attend Anthony Ager funeral at temple. Canton ministers applaud Mayor Stolberg for discontinuing prize fights at the auditorium and urge elimination of municipal dances. He says he will act if reports of immoral patrons prove true and promises to govern without outside pressure. The ministerial association expresses confidence in him as a Christian gentleman.
New York reports dancer Vera Maxwell insured each toe for 20000 dollars to protect her ability to perform. A big toe is priced higher than a little toe, and the policy covers sprains of ankle or toe as well.
Frank N. Sweitzer, assistant county prosecutor, will not take the job as head of the detectives for the state liquor license commission. He prefers to stay in Canton and continue as assistant prosecutor, saying he would have to move to Columbus. The refusal opens talk of nominating another Stark County man for the post.

Ohio Public Utilities Commission said intercommunicating telephone service in Canton may be granted on filing. A doctors committee led by Drs John F. O'Brien J Frank Kahler and James Fraunfelter plans action after filing and hearing dates are set.
Miss Annette Greenough begins duties as Canton public school nurse. She will stock medicine chests, inspect pupils, and advise teachers. Supt. Baxter plans rules for school medical guidance and hopes a physician will examine each pupil next year.
Mayor Stolberg says he will borrow the money and run the Muny dance if a financial obstacle blocks the event. He notes no known legal obstacle to holding the dance as planned.
