Timken Roller Bear Co plans a new tube mill in Canton with an estimated cost around 1 million dollars. Construction may finish in 60 days at a site west and southwest of the current plant, and will be followed by future units for large bearings production. Total investment could exceed 6 million with added steel and equipment.
Captain W. O. May of Edmonton attempted a winter mercy flight carrying 500,000 units of diphtheria serum to Fort Vermillion, 250 miles northeast, but engine trouble forced a stop at McLennan. He resumed toward Vermillion despite extreme cold and untracked snow, with no word for days.
Detroit January 4. Ford Motor Co. job line dwindled to fewer than 3,000 as the company still aimed to hire 500 men daily. Applicants at the Fordson plant and Dearborn factory swelled the lines, with two thirds of the 500 men in line since 2 a.m. waiting for the office to open.
In New York a January 4 column laments a California football player who ran the wrong direction. Will Rogers jokes editors preachers and public figures about standardization and claims the boy deserves a medal for trying something different.

Arthur Gardiner alias Arthur Schroeder the tape bandit attacked Harold Whetstone assistant night captain with an iron roller at midnight. Whetstone fought off the assault with aid from fellow convict Alex Kish who was serving life for murder. Kish came to Whetstone’s aid after Gardiner tried to move him to solitary for a rule infraction.
Local poultry shop advertises a wide range of birds at the lowest city prices with on the spot dressing service. The note mentions the address 602 East Tucson Avenue.
W S Perutz of Hartford beat death in a 1000 mile dash to reach his son Carroll in Cincinnati where the boy ill of scarlet fever lay in coma. Doctors warned the crisis might be temporary.
Buckingham Palace issued a bulletin reporting a quieter night for the king with slight improvement in local condition and stationary overall status. Ray therapy was given for the first time in several days, as physicians redouble efforts to sustain the king’s lead against illness.
The steamship Malakoff sank off Mahon Minorca Island during a storm today. Twenty seven crew members were lost and six were saved.
Los Angeles January 4 army mono plane Question Mark and crew of five extend endurance record to a fourth day over Imperial Valley. They relayed fuel 15 times totaling 5.12 tons of gasoline and one half ton of oil with 100 pounds of provisions. The air refueling record also surpassed by the Fokker mission while earlier the crew set the U S sustained flight mark.
A Canton girl writes to Molly Stark condemning college crowd booze parties and New Year’s Eve dances. She says girls were spiked and directs readers to her letter on Page 8 while brief references appear on other pages in the issue.
In London a thief took five tubes containing millions of influenza germs from Dr. M. R. Brady's car in the West End. Experts warned breakage and warm indoor conditions could spark an influenza epidemic, endangering patients and delaying recoveries. Authorities note prior similar thefts in 1928.
Riverside Cal Jan 4. The Northcott murder trial hinges on an alibi claim via Mrs Louisa Northcott. Attorneys seek to bring her from San Quentin to establish that Gordon Northcott was not on the farm during the killings. The defense argues her testimony could exonerate the defendant.
Weather observer Carl H. Meyer reports Canton enjoyed above freezing warmth Thursday as sunshine cleared the smoky gloom and foresees possibly a cooler spell tonight.
Senator elect William S Ware of Pennsylvania was described as a helpless invalid by his attorney Francis S Brown at a Reed special elections investigating committee hearing. Brown said Ware cannot appear without risking his life and cannot say when he can present his case in person.
Funeral services will be held in Cleveland for Mrs. Nannie Ball 72 mother of Ernest R. Ball composer of Mother Machree. She died yesterday at Beechurst Long Island and will be buried beside her son in Lakeview Cemetery. Fraternal Order of Eagles members meet tonight at 7 30 at the temple to attend funeral services for deceased brother Charles Grose at Parquelet Funeral Parlor Cleveland.
Garville Ohio January 4. County officers led by Detective John Stevens search an abandoned coal mine near Fredericksburg for the body of Melvin Horst who disappeared December 27. Five family members are jailed on child stealing charges with $10 000 bonds awaiting grand jury. Authorities found checks and letters in an Akron room tied to Bascom McHenry and Elias Arnold as part of the probe.
Wayneco Deputy Sheriff Lee Pontius paid a $10 fine and costs after pleading guilty to assault and battery of Clyde Mason, Akron Times-Press reporter-photographer, during a near riot with county officers and journalists. Walter Coyle aligned charges against Sheriff Albert Jacot. hearing set for today.
New York January 4. Police under Grover Whalen raid 60 speakeasies from The Battery to Harlem River and East to Hudson. Arrests, liquor seized, and axes used to destroy furnishings follow a court ruling allowing entry without warrants. Federal judge Mosecowitz urges indictments where warranted.
Washington reports say German complainants cite F W Allport Berlin findings that Germany’s year end mood is worse than 1927. The data may bolster German objections at the reparations conference and counter Gilbert’s view of improving conditions enabling Dawes payments. Also notice Red Men meet at club rooms at 7 30 to pay last respects to Brother Charles Gross Ady.
