Private Boyd Wasson 25 and a 21 year old girl known as Babe Montgomery died and lay unconscious in a gas filled room at a Third Street SE rooming house after a gas stove was left on high. Proprietor Louis Papas was arrested, then released on bond. Coroner ruled Wasson’s death accidental from inhaling the fumes. the girl’s condition remained doubtful at Aultman hospital.
At a Thursday meeting the police pension board approved veteran patrolman Louis Smiley for retirement on pension after more than 20 years with the Canton police. Joseph W. Jones of Central Power Co was released from the county workhouse Friday after spending under 50 hours there. The six month sentence for manslaughter connected to a June automobile crash in Canton Massillon rd was upheld by higher courts, and Jones paid a $200 fine before admission. A delayed release followed board disagreements resolved at a special meeting.

A. E. Graham general manager of the Ohio State Telephone Co. was named Canton chairman of the War Savings campaign to raise 1.5 million dollars for Thrift stamps. Postmaster Caldwell organized carriers as stamp agents and a school drive will urge all children to invest, with Professors Baxter and Armstrong directing classroom programs and essays on Thrift.
Continued on page two reports Western Pennsylvania lines face Saturday curtailment. Sleepers will be discontinued on multiple routes including No 9 west of Pittsburgh and No 115 Mansfield to Chicago. Wheeling and Lake Erie has already cut several trains. B&O has not confirmed further cuts.

Semi annual dividends of three to five percent were declared by First National City National and the Commercial and Savings banks. The First National offered five percent on 25000 to 50000 annual totals, City National four percent on 9690, and other banks three percent to four percent. Deposits rose by over 3 million versus 1916. The Canton national banks meet next Tuesday to elect officers and directors. City National capital stands at 240000 with 40000 surplus, total resources near 400000.
The penny lunch movement will be inaugurated at Burns school for children who would otherwise carry lunches. It will not serve all pupils and is non profit. the plan confines assistance to those with long distances to travel.
