Former Congressman Roscoe C. McCulloch of Canton is poised to declare his candidacy for Ohio governor. Backing from Stark County and the Sixteenth district signals federal party support, suggesting Carmi A. Thompson may pass on a run this year.
Mabel Normand, famed actress, described as the poor little girl who cannot resist a party by chauffeur H A Greer now jailed for shooting Courtland Dines. Greer claims self defense and hints Normand’s influence. Greer notes Normand gave platinum cuff links and vows no more wild parties. He is 39, born in Harlem.
Youngstown Ohio officials say enforcement of Mayor Scheible’s Sunday closing orders will wait until vaudeville contracts with one month remaining are fulfilled. Gas stations, soft drink venues, nonessential shops, street work, and motion picture openings face Sunday limits once contracts are filed. A raid on a public dance hall yielded liquor. two men were arrested as a Cleveland car with 22 quarts of contraband was seized.
Britain questions the United States about the seizure of the Canadian registry ship Tomoka by American authorities near the harbor and seeks an explanation for acting beyond the three mile limit. The foreign office confirms the inquiry aims to clarify why the vessel was seized outside territorial waters.
Jan. 3 report from Logan details theft of Motorcop Joseph Farbearn’s automobile found abandoned on a side street. The thief, unaware Farbearn kept a motorcycle, took the speedster for a long ride before leaving the car deserted, out of gas, but unharmed.
Mrs. Dora Warner fifty and her daughter Hazel nineteen were struck by a heavy truck on Beach City Wilmot road while returning home from Beach City. The driver Clarence Cooper Wilmot could not see due to an oncoming car’s glare. Hazel died at Massillon City hospital Thursday morning after suffering a fractured skull. Coroner T. H. Shorh ruled an unavoidable accident and no inquest will be held. The family leaves two other children. Funeral services will be held in Beach City Friday afternoon.
Congress reconvenes amid renewed bickering. In the Senate the fight over the Interstate Commerce Committee chair resumes, while in the House the taxation bonus dispute returns. Leaders acknowledge no progress on the many early-session battles.
The 1924 Greek parliament in its second day promises agitation as 180 republican members led by M. Hussos push to abolish the royal house. Papasnastion remains the effective republican leader while Admiral Hadjikyakos, backed by army officers, dominates the republican display. Venizelist factions threaten unity under their famed leader.
Seven bodies were recovered from the Corn Products Co. starch plant ruins in Pekin. An eighth victim died later in a hospital. Twenty seven workers were missing. Nearly 60 people were hospitalized or staying with relatives as officials sought casualty totals. In Naples Italy January 3 a report says the Italian steamship Mutlac is believed lost in the Mediterranean with a crew of 40. The steamship Adriatico said it picked up distress signals from the Mutlac but could not locate them.
Athens scene records the death of Mrs. Henrietta Courtney 87 a member of the pioneer Wolf's Plains family north of the city. The family home among ancient Indian mounds has stood as a landmark for nearly a century.
Jease Wise a 24 year old Erie railroad train man from Polk was hit by a train and sustained internal injuries in Ashland on January 4.

Three deaths from poisonous gas fumes occurred within 18 hours in Steubenville and nearby areas. Myrtie Frabbe, 18, of Follansbee, was found asphyxiated at a friend’s home. Harding eary, 26, died in the Wheel ing Steel plant furnace department. Lacy May Bucy, 15, died from inhaling fumes during the night.

In Massillon, Myrtie Jones, 27, was beaten to death and George Russell, 45, drank carbolic acid and died after murdering her. Police say Hall heard a scream, found Jones in a bloodied bed, and discovered Russell at her feet unconscious. Russell left and returned within 15 minutes, suggesting he sought poison after the assault.
Prof. L. B. Dickson of the University of Chicago has won the $1,000 prize from the American Association for the Advancement of Science for the outstanding contribution to science in 1923. Nevil M. Fenniman of the University of Cincinnati announced the award in Cincinnati. Dickson's theory of arithmetic is described as as important as the obsolete calculus theory of Ricci. He is the only American mathematician honored by corresponding members of the French academy of science.
Viscount Kivoure declined the imperial request to form a cabinet to replace the Yammamato ministry. Ordered two days earlier by the prince regent, he said the task was impossible and refused to proceed.
