Ned Taylor age 3 months died when a Christmas tree caused a short circuit and blaze gutted his father Claud Taylor’s home at 2320 Anderson Place SW. Firefighters found the infant on the stair landing. The father arrived home from work too late to save him.
Secretary of Labor Davis reflects in a New Year's review on 1928 prosperity, crediting the rising cooperation between managers and workers for booming production and improved conditions. He notes overall good will has extended through American business, with only a few major industries affected by overdevelopment.

Stark county authorities bound Wilbur O. Heldman to the grand jury without revealing the state's evidence in the Dec. 13 death of Margaret Heldman. The 28-year-old furnace salesman is jailed without bond as witnesses testified that Mrs. Heldman shot herself while he was taking her to Sheriff Ed Gibson to report the murder of Vernard E. Fearn. Coroner T. McQuate testified earlier as the inquest proceeded.
A United Press dispatch from Chicago reports a sharp cold wave moving across the region. Chicago expects temperatures to drop to 10 above zero Monday night and to zero Tuesday, with possible snow. Canton and vicinity face colder weather and light snow flurries.

Charles Shepherd a Black man accused of killing prison guard Sergt. J B Duvall and abducting his 18 year old daughter Ruth was burned at the stake by a mob in Clarksdale Mississippi. Reports say he was marched toward Parchman from which he had escaped Friday and was executed between Lombardy and Roundaway. A crowd of about 2000 witnessed the hanging and burning.
Washington reports that railroad earnings increased in 1928 over 1927 despite reduced passenger and freight traffic. R H Wishton president of the American Rail Association said the year also marked peak operating efficiency and economy in railroading.
A short note cites a 5 percent savings yield insisting no interest loss on withdrawals. It mentions Home Balidore at 128 Cleveland Ave NW as the address in the notice.
In Lansing Michigan on December 31 Mrs Etta Mae Miller mother of ten children was sentenced to life imprisonment under the habitual criminal law for four convictions of violating the prohibition law. Judge Charles B Collingwood ordered the term in the Detroit House of Correction after a jury found her habitual criminal status following a 15 minute verdict.
Melvin Raskin of Flint, a 28 year old bellboy, admits striking Laurence Hutchins during a fight over a girl. He pleads guilty to manslaughter and pays a 400 dollar fine. The incident stemmed from remarks by Raskin’s younger brother toward Anna Loviska.

Cleveland girl Jessie Brown Semple once glorified by Ziegfeld in Kid Boots has been granted a divorce from Joseph P. O Donnell 21 son of a Cleveland contractor. Miss Semple eloped with O Donnell June 20 1927 and charged neglect. A financial arrangement was made per her attorneys.
In Mcleary Washington dec 31 a New Year eve blaze destroyed the Henry McCleary Lumber Co mill’s door manufacturing section incurring about 3 million dollars. Fire crews from neighboring towns aided the McCleary volunteers in a five hour battle. It ranks among Washingtons worst lumber industry fires.
Buckingham Palace issued a bulletin stating that infection in King George’s lung had been conquered. The doctors focus on damage to the king’s constitution from the infection and begin a new nourishment plan using concentrated essence of jelly like chicken meat and occasional egg to aid assimilation.
Melvin Horst four year old son of Mr and Mrs Raymond Horst remained missing in Orrville on December 31 after vanishing Thursday night. Officials reported no new leads despite a Columbus sighting of a boy matching the description with an elderly couple on a streetcar.

In the Mojave Desert about 100 miles northeast of San Bernardino a sheriff's posse searched little used roads for Harry Palmer suspected of wrecking a Santa Fe passenger train and abducting an 11 year old Los Angeles boy. Tracks believed to be Palmer’s vehicle were found.
Canton auto license bureaus closed after a busy rush as hundreds of motorists still needed 1929 tags. Police Chief Hexamer offered eight hours grace until 8 am for tardy buyers, then will tag drivers with 1928 plates. Each tag costs $1 and fines apply in municipal court.

State Treasurer Bert B. Buckley of Dayton was indicted by a federal grand jury on conspiracy to offer bribes to prohibition agent Eckhart. Buckley and associate Schrimper deny wrongdoing claiming a frame up. The governor may remove Buckley if convicted. no action expected before Jan 14.
