Berlin reports the death of Frederich Ebert president of the German republic at 10:15 am after complications from peritonitis following an appendicitis operation. Family and Secretary Meissner were at his bedside as doctors noted a relapse and unconsciousness ended his pain.
Twelve army planes from the first pursuit group take off at 6 36 a m from Michigan en route to Florida to test endurance and report on dawn to dusk flight permissions. After a stop at Hialeah field they plan a machine gun demonstration in Miami and will push to Langley and Fortress Monroe with potential congressional impact.
Boston February 28 authorities blamed stock market gambling for the plight of Mrs Aimee A Sweeney confidential secretary and adviser to mining operators. After a night in city jail she was brought into Municipal court charged with larceny of bonds valued at 22 900 from Mrs Don A Prince society woman.
A fire in the second story of a rural Houston area home claimed the lives of four children of Mr. and Mrs. Merl Carson. Four other children and the mother and father escaped by jumping from a window as flames engulfed the residence shortly after midnight.
A massive explosion on the island of Caju near Rio de Janeiro killed an estimated 300 people and injured many as 4 000 cases of dynamite ignited an oil fire. The blast rattled Rio ten miles away cracking the Phoenix theater roof and deafening residents while firefighters and laborers battled the blaze and rushed victims to hospitals.
In Girgenti Italy on February 28 a feud unfolds over the eight billion lire fortune of eighteenth century pirate Francesco Claudio known as King of Madagascar. More than 300 heirs from the Girgent district claim portions, with eight Sicilian Bonetti families leading the case and the Pirandello line expected to receive about one eighth.

Barcelona February 28. Osborne Wood is expected to reach Valencia today and then sail for the United States after a conference with the American consul. Wood left in good spirits and flashed a roll of bills, signaling he is well supplied. Spanish police continue to ignore his activities. French police did not come to Barcelona to arrest him.
Forecasted cooler conditions for President Coolidge's inauguration next Wednesday. Weather bureau expects pleasant crowds in Washington for the ceremony.
Cincinnati reports George Kleinberg 16 died of poisoning and brother August 18 near death after threatening letters to family. Another case in Cincinnati notes Mrs Helen Herancourt 28 found dead by poisoning and attempted jump from window. Wooster discusses Blanche Tobias 20 sent to Columbus juvenile bureau for mental illness after killing infant four months ago. Columbus notes Baltimore and Ohio Railroad withdraws utility commission application to remove trains on Newark Sandusky division Willard Sandusky.
In New York on February 28 a cyanide calcium carboy aboard the Clyde Line Lenape leaked as it was stowed in the hold. One man was fatally poisoned and 15 others overcome. Eight volunteers succumbed before firefighters with 48 masks could reach the scene. Authorities warned a larger breach could have killed all aboard.
The Ohio state titles commission sanctioned a 7,000,000 bond issue by the Northern Ohio Traction and Light Co of Akron. It authorizes 2,100,000 first lien refunding bonds, 2,500,000 six percent bonds due 1927, and 2,900,000 two year notes. Proceeds reimburse prior capital expenditures and fund future additions, with use of proceeds from the 2,500,000 mortgage bonds deferred.
Pale faced 26 year old Barli Wagner and 49 year old patrolman Henry J. Richter died in a gun duel after Wagner held up a filling station. Wagner succumbed in a hospital near his home. Richter died the day before. Both were to be buried in distant sections of Cleveland today.
Dr Frank Poudreau resigns as chief of the division of communicable diseases in the state health department. He will sail for Europe in March to serve as statistician in the health section of the League of Nations at Geneva. He is succeeded by Dr Chandler P Robbins.
Dr. Geo T Harding father of the late president says he is too old to make the trip and will not be a White House guest for the inauguration on March 4.

Columbus Feb 28 Members of the house finance committee who have worked 16 hours daily for a week were set to finish drafting the general appropriations bill carrying about 72 million dollars. The panel planned to introduce measures in the house late Monday and reportedly rejected salary boosts for minor welfare department employees. The house rules committee will finish preparing the Stacy calendar for Monday afternoon with no major measures expected.
George Daniels of the Duerr Smith-Lane Co. informed police Friday night that his automobile was stolen on Market avenue north.
Ty Cobb former Detroit manager arrived in Augusta after a scuffle at Atlanta station over a meal price. He was arrested, posted $11 bond, and left police headquarters in a towering rage following an argument at the lunch counter with the manager and a policeman.
Brig. Gen. Wm. Mitchell, assistant chief of the Army Air Service, is accused by Secretary Weeks of publishing articles without War Department approval. Weeks testified before the House aircraft committee that Mitchell sought authority from President Coolidge to publish material on 1921 bombing tests. Weeks defended the delay to avoid disturbance, noting prior statements had drawn naval denials.
After Chas A Stoneham, president of the New York Giants, was acquitted on mail fraud charges, juror Nathan Spector testified he faced threats in the jury room and another juror said he decided to acquit early. Spector cited a 9 to 3 initial vote before final acquittal amid accusations of persecution by the government.
Washington reports the United States will protest if Japan's diet passes a government bill lifting the land ownership ban by aliens but allowing discrimination against Americans. The U.S. argues for reciprocal rights for all foreign residents and cites the Feb 21 1911 Japanese note on treaty rights.
The Chicago city council approved spending 397 million dollars to buy, equip and extend surface and elevated lines to connect downtown districts with subways. The measure will go to voters at the April 7 election.
