Canton readers are invited to a silhouette contest starting Thursday night to test how well residents know Canton merchants. About one hundred silhouettes of prominent locals will appear over ten days with copy about their businesses. Prizes total one hundred dollars for top identifications. employees of Canton Newspapers are excluded.
Rome reports new Italian envoy Gia somo De Martino as saying immediate negotiations to fund the Italo American debt of 2 billion dollars are possible. He notes he has not fixed a date to call on America and will likely consult with Prince Caetani before traveling to the United States. Dispatches say the U S government expects De Martino to arrive soon and present a funding plan.
Massillon February meeting agenda shows Rotarian George Freeborn to discuss the Community Chest organization and Dians at the Thursday noon luncheon in the ballroom of the Y W C A.
Floyd Collins remains trapped in a plastered sandstone tunnel after a second collapse. Rescue teams, led by Dr W H Hazlett, bring drills and give Collins whiskey and blankets as they widen the passage inch by inch. Air is cut off and doctors fear suffocation.
Sylvia Garver, superintendent, appeals to the supreme court to stop the senatorial investigation of the Soldiers and Sailors Orphans Home at Nenta. She cites lack of charges served, secrecy of hearings, and denial of a chance to defend as reasons to pause the probe. The court will hear arguments soon.
In Cleveland on February 4 police pledge protection for the Reformed Seventh Day Adventists planned final earth end meeting set for February 6. A near riot occurred when hecklers disrupted last night, denying the apocalyptic claim by Adventist prophets.
A state tax commission report shows taxes averaging 40.42 per person paid by Orleans residents in 1923. Findlay has the lowest city tax rate in the state at 1.60 per 100 valuation.
Washington reports that President Coolidge will not push Congress to act on farm relief. Washington February 4 The House rejected the Senate postal measure and moved a House bill to boost postal rates to fund a six billion dollar pay increase for postoffice employees. The House postoffice committee drafted the measure expected to pass to the floor this week with administration leaders backing swift action. The White House signaled a veto if expenditures exceed receipts.
Nick Thomas pleaded guilty in Massillon municipal court to intoxication and was fined 25 dollars plus costs. The carrying concealed weapons charge from yesterday was reduced to intoxication and also pled guilty.
In Los Angeles on February 4 a 7 year old, Alsa Thompsons, confesses to feeding ground glass to her twin babies two years ago and to poisoning another woman, while police doubt the tale and doctors study its truth amid reports of a battery acid mix and ant paste finding in a boarders’ home. The child’s father rejects the confession as false as medical and legal authorities weigh the claim.
A day in New York reported thirty nine sudden deaths, the highest in years. Violent causes dominated with bullets, alcohol, autos, fires and gas, totaling many lives across Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens. Other fatalities included falls, drownings, and a police fall.

Charlestown West Virginia February 4 The Supreme Court will hear arguments on a petition by nine cities protesting a rate increase recently allowed for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co. by the public service commission. The hearing was postponed to this morning due to the court's heavy docket.
Ohio State University investigators announced a deadly poison mixed with medicines at the campus free dispensary caused two student deaths and serious illness in others. Dr. McCampbell said a common prescription given to Hull and Puskin matched that given to Thompson, with suspicion of adulteration in the dispensary. Autopsies may be requested by family members to confirm causes. Thompson, from Canton, remained critically ill after stomach pumping revealed strychnine.
Chicago February 4 Col Charles R Forbes former head of the veterans bureau and John Thompson St Louis contractor were sentenced to two years in the federal pen and fined $10 000 each for conspiring to defraud the government in bureau hospitalization contracts Judge Carpenter denied a new trial and imposed the sentences as the extreme penalty provided by law
Martha Handreke a 16 year old Cleveland school girl swallowed poison after her parents objected to her staying out late. Police report says she is the sixth to attempt suicide over similar parental restrictions in the past two months. She was taken to Fairview Hospital where she remained in danger.

Rep James Finefrock of Stark proposes a measure to tax corporations where they actually conduct business. The bill defines residence as the place of principal business, based on incorporation documents, or the district of greatest activity if no Ohio office exists. The aim is to tax property where it truly exists, not just where meetings are held.
