The Thirty seventh division formed from the Ohio National Guard in Camp Sherman brings 17 heavy guns captured from Germans in Belgium to be distributed in Ohio cities. They receive King Albert of Belgium’s medal for valor and three French citations and expect to return to the U S by February.
Berlin reports show Germans fear Wilson will punish war makers. Delegates oppose any penalty that makes the Kaiser a hero. Ludendorff is widely despised while Hindenburg remains acceptable. Public mood calls for letting the past rest as the empire faces dismemberment and indemnity fears.
Ashington Dec 23. Senators and representatives from Iowa and California attacked the revenue bill in its present form. Red Cross nurse Miss Harry Bell Durate of Pensacola and Lieutenant Frederick A. Starke of Stamford secretly wed in late October. Starke flew to Paris in his airplane for the ceremony after meeting at Limoges where Durate’s unit was stationed. Both have since served near the Rhine district in Germany. Other Red Cross nurses in Rhine hospitals include Edna Drake of Port Jervis and Polly Ellis of New Orleans.

London dispatch says President Wilson may accept Sir Brederick Smiths view that Britain and the United States should hold a joint blockade right at the peace conference to prevent submarine outrages. Sub committees and a grand committee will run the talks with German delegates joining the latter. Premier Clemenceau will preside per diplomatic custom.

American aviators downed 845 enemy aircraft in the conflict with 491 confirmed and 354 not. On armistice day 39 aero squadrons operated on the west front as 271 of the enemy planes were shot down. Casualties totaled 442 with 109 killed, 193 wounded, 200 missing, 27 prisoners, and three interned. The total air strength in France reached 68,090 with 6,472 planes received from 1917 to 1918. eight training schools were set up in France to train 3,800 officers and 11,700 men.
The 1919-20 revenue bill faces a quick vote with senators kept in continuous session to finish the measure before Christmas recess. Senator Kenyon of Iowa assailed the senate finance committee for removing most luxury taxes, accusing Democrats of abandoning past leaders by placing the heaviest burden on those least able to bear it.
