CHICAGO December 9 Miss Gertrude Hassler once dubbed the Velvet Slipper Girl arranged a legal contract marriage with Frederick Carpenter of Chicago after a bitter lawsuit with Carl G. Fisher. The contract promised fidelity and happiness and was signed in Kenosha Wisconsin. A traditional ceremony is now planned after a marriage license was issued at Elgin Illinois.

German Chancellor rejects peace offers unless terms fit dignity
Berlin Dec 9 Germany will make no peace proposals to the allies but will discuss terms compatible with Germany's dignity and safety if entente powers offer them. Imperial Chancellor Von Bethmann Hollweg told the reichstag after a conference with the emperor. He urged that peace, if any, must shorten the war and warned against proposals prolonging it. Dr Scheidemann opened the debate with a call for information on conditions acceptable for peace negotiations.

Strike settlement at Cleveland Canton plant ends walkout
Mediator Daniel J. Keefe announced a settlement of the Cleveland Canton springs works strike. Fifty percent of strikers will be rehired immediately with others to follow as needed and a nine or ten hour day, or eight hours with a double shift, depending on work. A committee will handle grievances with management. Roy Horne praised the resolution after a mass meeting of W and L E employees at Massillon.

Open sewer work completed in southwest end district
Last connections to the city sewer for district four in the southwest end were completed on Wednesday. Service Director Kent said permits for house connections should be issued immediately from the city engineer's office. A state health board order had prevented connections until the new sewage disposal plant opened. The main connection on Mill Road SW across Market Ave was installed and about 1000 permits are expected. First applicants will receive priority connections.

A dazed woman with a deep scalp wound was found in the road two miles north of Bedford Ohio by a southbound N. O. T. car crew at 11 40 PM on Wednesday.
