Pittsburgh man killed when struck by car in Canton

Charles Reining a Pittsburgher, 44, died instantly Friday evening after being struck while stepping from a Sixth Street Southwest car. Canton Soldier Killed in Action and Wounded

William Solomon and Samuel Ferraro are named among the wounded. One Canton soldier was killed in action and another former Co. C member, under Captain Herve W. Miner, restored to duty after a head wound. John Mandelakis was killed in action per Saturday’s casualty list. Ferraro has a shrapnel wound and is in a base hospital in France. Solomon is the son of Mrs. Lydia Solomon.

Ukrainian national union seizes Ukraine after battle

Swedish report from Kiev dated December 7 says forces of the Ukrainian national union occupy Kiev after heavy fighting. The dispatch claims 106000 casualties and lists General Skoropadsky and 600 Russian officers among the dead as the union gains control across Ukraine. The movement, anti German though not clearly pro allied, rose as peasants and workers resisted German grain seizures and transportation shutdowns.

Capt Lawrence's Wife Dies of Spanish Influenza

Mrs. Margaret Stuby Lawrence wife of Captain Gerald Lawrence of the Fourth Ambulance corps Thirty seventh division died suddenly at her home in Columbus from Spanish influenza. The couple married just before his departure for France. A Canton native and Ohio State University graduate she was known to many locals. Captain Lawrence was believed to be in Belgium, after recruiting Stark county men for the unit.
