The Rainbow Division and 15 divisions of the American Third Army are moving toward the Rhine with the occupation force. Charles Reining a Pittsburgher, 44, died instantly Friday evening after being struck while stepping from a Sixth Street Southwest car. Driver L E Griffith of 1325 Cleveland Avenue NW remained at the scene. Survived by wife two daughters in Canton and two sons in Pittsburgh. German civilians show reserve while posters urge surrender of firearms and ammunition. General Pershing reports front-wide reach in official communication.
Swedish report from Kiev dated December 7 says forces of the Ukrainian national union occupy Kiev after heavy fighting. The dispatch claims 106000 casualties and lists General Skoropadsky and 600 Russian officers among the dead as the union gains control across Ukraine. The movement, anti German though not clearly pro allied, rose as peasants and workers resisted German grain seizures and transportation shutdowns.
Mrs. Margaret Stuby Lawrence wife of Captain Gerald Lawrence of the Fourth Ambulance corps Thirty seventh division died suddenly at her home in Columbus from Spanish influenza. The couple married just before his departure for France. A Canton native and Ohio State University graduate she was known to many locals. Captain Lawrence was believed to be in Belgium, after recruiting Stark county men for the unit.
The First Congregational church announces a bazaar at 918 Tusc. t W. featuring Christmas gifts aprons baked goods groceries Orientals and many kinds of fancy work. Proceeds support church activities.
London dispatch reports Li vonia Esthenia and Courland councils appeal to Allies and neutrals to intervene as Bolshevik forces invade northwestern Russia. Baltic inhabitants despair while refugees gather at coastlines expecting allied or neutral warships. A British fleet is rumored to have arrived at Reval, per Paris reports.
Three persons are dead and several injured after Atlantic Coast Line train No 89 derailed south of El Rod North Carolina late last night. Officials say the wreck was caused by a broken switch and the accident halted service in the area.
The Charles II Mission will not hold services Sunday due to illness in the superintendent's household.
Canton relatives learn of the death of Louise Hartzell a fifteen year old girl fatally burned in a high school laboratory explosion. Louise a senior at Minneapolis High School and niece of Judge Henry Wise spent the summer of 1917 visiting relatives in Canton.
