Early Friday a cherry avenue grocery store owner Italian, Toney Scop, was killed in a fusillade. The attacker fled. a nephew and witnesses described a grisly scene with multiple gunshot and knife wounds. Police pursue a suspect linked by cap clue.
A committee named by Director Commerce Phipps will examine duties that overlap across departmental branches. Members include FE A. Tinker, H A Dykeman, J W Prugh, and utilities, fire, and building and loan supervisors. Phipps says one actor may unify work now handled by multiple inspectors.
Ohio weather shows snow likely tonight with cold temperatures around 9 a m and 57 inches precipitation mention. Tuscarawas Street reopens after six months of improvements with a carnival night drawing thousands. A staged clash between Indian figures and U S troops ended in victory for the soldiers. Bands from Thayer’s and the American Legion provided music while clowns and vaudeville acts entertained amid heavy crowds and police coordination.
Charles W. Morse, New York financier, was arrested on arrival in Havre on the liner Paris to testify before an American grand jury regarding wartime relations with the United States Shipping Board. Morse denied wrongdoing and said the charges were surprising. He noted he traveled for health and denied incognito status.
Morse’s sons Edwin A. and Harry F. Morse say their father traveled to Europe for illness and not to dodge charges by the Shipping Board. They contend the alleged fraud involved up to 40 million dollars and that he left without knowledge of evidence to be presented to a grand jury. Taft had pardoned Morse in 1912 after a fifteen year federal sentence.

Two breaches of the Irish armistice today resulted in two prison warders killed and several wounded at Dublin and Derry. In Derry a jail assault saw warders overpowered while outside attackers attempted to storm the jail. soldiers fired on Sinn Fein sympathizers as they tried to climb walls. In Dublin civilians storm Callan hotel, shots exchanged with army officers leaving several wounded.
John Flaynes convicted on a shooting to wound charge seeks a new trial and asks to be dismissed from custody. Attorneys argue assault not an indictment element and that the jury erred in verdict. Incident stemmed from a massillon moulder strike when strikers chased him to his home. no injuries were reported.

He alleges a conspiracy to bar his return after dismissal for alleged protection money charge which civil service commission found unfounded. He asks for restoration to duty and back pay.
