Assistant Secretary of Navy Warner who oversees aviation is taking flying lessons. He travels often by plane and hopes to pilot one himself, following a wartime example set by Army aviation chief Davidson who learned to fly during the war and recently relearned.
An undismissed jury in Gallia County, Ohio, returned a true bill charging Eddie Peppers, 21, a hotel porter, with the murder of Mrs. Florence Buck, a West Virginia postmistress. Buck was found nude and strangled at Park Central on August 15. Peppers confessed on August 20 and was taken to Ross County jail to protect him from mobs.
In Morganton Kentucky on August 31, Kiah Abbott a 40 year old farmer shot and killed his father in law William Moore 65 and wounded his wife Myrtle Abbott 25. Abbott then killed himself in a murder suicide after a divorce suit and alimony attachment had been filed against him. Sheriff Luther Tuck led the investigation.
John W. Bache an iron and steel broker filed for divorce from Mrs. Linda H. Bache here in Trenton New Jersey. Mrs Bache had recently created a sensation by eloping with a Plainfield traffic policeman.
Robert T. White an assistant district attorney in Middlesex County resigned to honor a vow made on his death bed. He said he fell seriously ill last year and vowed to join the priesthood if he recovered. White plans to begin priesthood studies in Washington on September 15.
Toronto reports George Young, winner of the Catalina swim, collapsed with cramps and quit the 21 mile marathon as Ernest Vierkoetter surged ahead. About 300 swimmers began at 8 50 a m under Premier Ferguson's starting gun while spectators watched from the lakefront as rescuers aided several competitors amid rough seas.
Raymond B. Dailey an assistant cashier confessed to stealing about 30000 dollars from the Citizen National Bank over eight years. Federal authorities took him into custody after bank books were examined. No bail request has been filed.
Toledo August 31 three members of a Toledo family died in a Milton Center crossing accident. Clarence Hill 25, his wife Glenna 23, and their 14 month old son Scott were killed when their car was struck by a Baltimore and Ohio railroad train. The child died en route to a Toledo hospital.
CAMDEN N J Aug 31 Mrs Hannah Butler of Clementine Heights in Camden jail after arrest for disorderly conduct remained inside of her own accord. A bail bond was posted but she refused to leave claiming her actions did not warrant arrest.
French ambassador Paul Claudel arrived in New York aboard the liner Paris. He sent a message of goodwill from the people of France to all Americans.
Examination of the wreckage shows 18 soldiers killed in Cucchiari bar racks collapse. The victims were part of the 8th infantry.
The Fokker monoplane Old Glory, piloted by Lloyd W. Bertaud and James De Witt, is prepared to depart Roosevelt Field Garden City N Y for Rome within an hour if southerly wind shifts to southwest. Only light wind persisted until nine but delays loom if conditions fail to improve.
A staged appeal by Will Rogers urges Bobby Jones of Atlanta to require aviation landing sites at golf courses. Rogers argues cross marked fairways would aid air travel safety. if clubs resist, he predicts government compulsion. The letter frames Jones as a potential defender of aviation.
President Coolidge will visit Custer August 31 to dedicate a Boy Scout camp and thank the scouts who have gifted him presents since he began summer residence at the nearby game lodge. National Scout authorities will attend.

Investigation began in Painesville Ohio into a wreck at the B and O and Nickel Plate intersection that killed engineer Pearl Elwell and assistant Louis J Ladt of Youngstown and injured three passengers. Officials from both railroads would determine which train had right of way and whether signals worked properly.
In Matawan New Jersey on August 31 a traffic policeman commandeered John D Rockefeller's car with Rockefeller aboard and pursued a speeding violator. The chase ended with the officer Le Roy Sproul taking five shiny new dimes as a reward from Rockefeller.
William J. Thoma and John Schultz are bound over to Starkee grand jury on illicit liquor manufacturing charges after a hearing in Justice of the Peace A. B. Correll's court. Both men posted $5,000 bond. State witnesses included Detective Fitzgerald and Sheriff Gibson with deputies Daily, Thorne, and McPeak. The raid near a Canton mine uncovered a 100 gallon still, corn sugar whisky, and two abandoned stills.
It is reported that Paul Redfern, the Georgia to Brazil flyer, may still be alive after a log from the Norwegian ship Christian Krohg records sighting his plane between 3 and 3 45 pm Friday in the Caribbean about 1675 miles from Brunswick. The two vessels exchanged signals and Redfern steered toward land before disappearing, with a position given 165 miles north of the Venezuelan coast.
