John Whitmire a 14 year old rider on Navarrerd Street suffered a compound fracture of the leg when a street car jumped the track at Navarrerd and Henry SW. The car’s broken rail sent Whitmire and two companions tumbling as a bicycle was wrecked. Whitmire was taken to Ingleside hospital by Miller Blanchard’s ambulance.
Auguste Scherer, a longtime resident of 518 Thirteenth Street SE, who fought with General Joffre in 1870, plans to sail October 17 to offer his services to France after burying his 17 year old daughter and his wife. He vowed to join the war and witness Kaiser’s surrender.
