The airship ZR-2 exploded today at 5 45 p m near an air station during a test prior to a planned transatlantic flight. Fifty aboard, only two survived the wreck followed by a rapid collapse and fire. The disaster leaves many missing and signals an end to the speed trial as engineers assess the debris and casualties.
Washington reports the United States and Germany may sign a peace treaty soon. President and Secretary of State Hughes say the senate foreign relations committee unanimously approved the pact before submission. Ellis Loring Dresel, American commissioner in Berlin, will sign, replacing the Versailles treaty.
In Canton a 22 year old man, Ted R. Lichtenwalter of 611 Ingramar SW, was shot while riding with Miss Marguerite Miller, 21. He drove himself to a doctor then Mercy Hospital where he remains under treatment as deputies investigate a mystery that includes a reported trailing car and a missing .45 pistol.
Washington Aug 24 The war finance corporation bill to extend credits to farmers may be ironed out today to allow a Congress recess. Mondell warns of deep rifts over the anti beer bill as the Senate and House seek a short break. Senate leaders hope to push through emergency tariff measures after the McNary bill clears. If a recess is denied a three day delay may occur as a gentleman's agreement to cover vacation time.
