Houston endured a night of race rioting as Negro troopers of the Twenty fourth Infantry clashed with police and Illinois artillery. Martial law ordered across Harris County, with 499 troops patrolling streets after Captain J W Mattes was killed and Thelma Reichert, 15, shot. All Negro troops to be withdrawn from Houston.
Thomas A Edison, escorted by Secretary Daniels, met with President Wilson at the White House. Edison has devoted months to war related experimentation and is rumored to have devised an epoch making device for use against submarines, aiming at offensive and defensive value, with details likely kept until deployment.
Front reports indicate heavy fighting on western, Italian, and eastern fronts. French seize Hill 804 at Verdun while Lens nears, Trieste sees Italian advances, and Riga faces Austro German pressure as German and Austrian prisoners rise to about 30 000.

Thirteen men killed and 18 persons injured as Houston and Harris county are under martial law. A race riot followed a police attempt to arrest a colored woman near a soldiers camp. A white captain killed a white girl and she was scalped. About one hundred armed colored soldiers are at large.
Police report a third motorcycle wreck in two months. Officer George Beresford’s bike was struck by a Noaker Ice Cream Co truck at Tuscarawas and Bradav by. Beresford found the machine 100 feet from its original position. Reckless driving charges are planned against the truck driver.
