Rudolph Valentino died at 12 10 p m in New York after a weeklong struggle following an appendicitis operation. The famed screen star, once known as the Sheik, was confirmed by his personal representative.
Representative Theodore Burton of Ohio, member of the U.S. debt funding commission, departs London after talks with British officials on Europe’s economic conditions. He expects to attend the inter parliamentary union meetings in Geneva with no prospect of a debt policy revision.
At 12 10 p m Valentino died following a rapid decline from pleurisy with saline injections into the chest. Early morning hours showed no change then rising fever and pulse as he slept, finally awakening unaware of his critical condition and passing away at noon.
The actor died from poison that affected the heart lining after a last minute blood transfusion. At his bedside were Ullman Joseph Schenck of United Artists Father Edward Leonard and Valentino’s three physicians. He received the Catholic church’s last rites and was unconscious at death.
Los Angeles August 23 Pola Negri fiancé of Rudolph Valentino collapsed in grief upon learning the death of the famed Sheik in New York. She recovered after ammonia but cannot travel while her film Hotel Imperial remains unfinished. Lasky officials said they cannot halt production.
Industry leaders anticipate a 1926 production near 6,000,000 vehicles with first half output around 2.45 million. Prof. Claire Griffin of Michigan predicts 27,000,000 cars in 1930, while manufacturers plan large scale operations into year end. Executives from Otis Steel, White Motor Co, Eaton Axle, Thompson Products report continued strong demand and optimism.
In Clarinda Iowa Aug 23 authorities recovered the bodies of a traveling salesman Thomas E Anderson and 18 year old Elsie Benge formerly of Marysville Ohio in a local cornfield. Officials weighed whether the deaths were self inflicted or murder. Papers in Andersons pockets showed he owned a restaurant in town.
Dorothy Kirk 21 of Canal Fulton died after being brought to St John’s hospital by a man who fled as nurses tried to revive her. Authorities recaptured pills found in her pocketbook and room for chemical analysis. Investigators seek statements from the unidentified man posing as an interne. Her burial is planned in Canal Fulton after autopsy results.
In Sheboygan Wisconsin on August 23 Mary Aldeikauskas 16 and Mary Janesky 15 with Charles Stay were badly burned when a motorcycle crashed into a stalled automobile spraying flaming gasoline. Chris Marks and Guy Tuttle owners of the auto were severely burned freeing the victims. Janesky and Stay sustained fractures and burns as Starr blamed blinding headlights for missing the stalled car.
Durham August 23 Ex cavations at Shechem in Palestine are expected to yield many archaeological treasures for Duke University which supports the expedition. Shechem is the site of the tomb of Josephs and Jacobs well.
The crop reporting board says the United States cotton crop this year will total about 15.248 million bales. The August 16 condition stands at 63.5 percent of normal, with 48.898 million acres in cultivation as of June 25.
In Cleveland on Sunday, Mrs. Helen Mikels, 20, is dead and Harvey Elam, 28, in serious condition from bullet wounds after a rooming house shooting. Police say Elam shot Mikels in jealousy then attempted suicide and will face murder charges.
Clara belle Barrett abandoned her bid to swim the English Channel after more than twenty one hours in the water. She started from Dover and was a mile from shore at 2 10 pm before fog and drift forced withdrawal.
In a 100 mile feature at the Northampton motordrome near Akron two drivers were near death and two others seriously injured. James Bowman 30 of Columbus and Marcus Therkill 32 of Chicago sustained critical injuries including skull fracture and crushed chest. William Jeffries 25 of Chicago had a fractured leg and George Golden 35 of Akron suffered minor injuries. The cars crashed through a fence tearing 200 feet of railing and 388 posts.
Police pursue robbers who blew the safe at the west end branch post office in a grocery storefront, securing 394.74 in currency and stamps. The explosion woke neighbors but locals did not intervene.
General Pangalos, ousted Greek dictator, was captured at sea and brought to Athens aboard the destroyer Leon. He is confined in a military prison as General Kendylis’s regime determines his fate after a naval engagement near Cape Matapan. Captain Kelialexis, a Pangalos ally, resigned his command.
Charles H Voegle, 72, Mansfield business leader and grand commander of Ohio Knights Templar, died Sunday night. Born in Stuttgart, he led Voegele & Dinning confectionery, presided Barnes Manufacturing Co., and served as director in local industries and banks. A 33rd degree Mason since 1916, he was grand commander after being elected at Tiffin last October. Funeral at First Presbyterian Church at 2:30 PM Wednesday.
Fedgar Black aged 38 and Ralph Brown ing 27 died when their automobile collided with a Baltimore and Ohio excursion train bound for Toledo near Sharonville just before midnight.

Chief Justice William S. Gummere refused to act on bail applications for Willie Stevens and Henry DeLa B. Card pender held without bail for the murders of Rev. Dr. Fidward Hall and Mrs. Eleanor Mills. Special Prosecutor Alexander Simpson, a state senator, opposed the move.
In Toledo a common pleas suit seeks 75000 as commission from the sale of the Bock Bearing Co to Timken Roller Bearing Co. Arnold of Canton claims he originated the plan and urged officers to sell. Timken paid 1.5 million on August 17, 1926, after contracting August 5. Bock denies the claim. The Toledo plant is now Toledo Bearing Co.
An unidentified middle aged woman died by suicide at Toledo Beach Line bridge over the Ottawa River today. Witnesses say she removed her false teeth coat and hat before jumping.
Akron Aug 23 James Bowman 30 of Columbus dies from injuries after automobile race accident here yesterday that left three other drivers injured officials say.

Eight masked men bound three watchmen and looted vaults at the Wahl Pen Co in Chicago. They damaged two vaults and escaped with $20,000 in gold pen points, while leaving $50,000 in gold, $5,000 in gold bars and two iridium phins valued at $2,000 behind.
