Washington Aug 21 funds to curb hoarders stalled as the house commerce committee debates the food control act. Palmer urges removing small business exemptions and extending powers to the justice department. Opposition grows to fines and prison terms for profiteers as farmers and big business clash over enforcement timelines.
Surplus army foodstuffs in Canton were opened for sale from Friday morning through the weekend, with about half of the total value sold and the remainder expected to clear in two days. Postage rate reductions spurred buyers, and the auction was paused briefly for order checks before resuming in the morning.
Local weather forecast shows showers and temperatures in the 60s and 70s. Community notices advertise an initiation ceremony on August 22 and events including a sheet steel mill opening and a chocolate shop launch with afternoon timing.

Gnau heads procurement and claims in the ammunition division in Washington D C. He will be discharged Sept. 1 and join the legal staff of the Washington claims bureau while finishing law studies at Georgetown University.
An affidavit filed by J. P. Blum charges Matt Larkin with failure to observe traffic rules near North Canton. Larkin, driving a truck, allegedly refused to let Blum pass for over a mile. Justice A. B. Correll will hear the case Monday as authorities pursue the maximum penalty for this first road hog arrest.

Theo dore Leonard Jr a Columbus poultry dealer was fined 500 dollars and costs for violating the cold storage law. He plans an appeal as state inspectors press a campaign against food hoarding. Six other men under similar bonds face related charges, not to be moved in municipal court.
A Canton Storage Co truck with whisky worth about ten thousand dollars was under armed guard in Lisbon on Thursday. Drivers J H W Beemer and J W Heisler were jailed awaiting federal officers to examine the cargo alleged to be contraband. The truck, sent Tuesday to haul machinery from Cleveland, was reportedly bound for Pittsburgh. Local officials denied prior knowledge of the seizure or arrests.
