In Lima on August 18 Howard William King 9 drowned in a gravel pit after falling from a raft while playing with his brother Donald 8 and Charlie Bechdolt. The trio rode to shore. the grave fate remained unknown for five hours until Bechdolt learned from King’s brother and told his mother. Police and firefighters recovered the body after a brief search.
Cherbourg France Aug 18 The second American forces began disembarking in France today. The scene mirrored the first AEF arrival at St Nazaire on June 26 1917. About 600 members of the American Legion are among the first group to reach France for the coming American expedition in Paris next month.

Washington Aug 14 The coal rate dispute between allied Pennsylvania Ohio and Kentucky West Virginia Tennessee and Virginia bituminous coal producers may reach the United States Supreme Court. The Interstate Commerce Commission suspended yesterday the voluntary rate cut of 20 cents a ton promoted by four railroads serving the southern fields. The cut offset the official reduction ordered for carriers serving the Ohio Pennsylvania fields to help them compete with southern producers.
Patrick Gallagher, night watchman, was fired upon by four gunmen while on rounds outside the Gordon Square Arcade in Cleveland. He escaped injury as bullets missed. Police opened an investigation into the attempted assault and sought witnesses.
