Bad weather delayed the start of Bert Hassell’s monoplane Greater Rockford on the 1600 mile leg toward Stockholm. In Cochrane Ontario a large crowd greeted the launch, weather worsened later, delaying takeoff and challenging the planned 16 hour flight across Labrador and ice strewn waterways.
Twelve of 19 drivers entered in the 2 1 2 mile race at Altoona speedway had qualified. Duray led qualifiers with 138.6 mph, McDonough second at 137.2 mph. The remaining seven entrants would attempt to qualify in the afternoon.
In Beverly Hills Aug 17 a letter from Will Rogers humorously notes Commander Byrd preparing for his upcoming expedition. He warns politicians may dislike the departure before elections and laments potential land shortages for golf courses as the public is urged to let the poor play.

The Panama mail liner Ecuador, which ran aground off Cape San Lazaro, Lower California, yesterday, resumed its voyage toward New York after passengers were transferred to the Sinaloa. Tugs floated the grounded vessel and it will stop at Mazatlan to pick up passengers before continuing.

John J. Raskob of the Democratic National Committee says Herbert Hoover should detail his prohibition views in his acceptance speech before the country learns his position. Raskob urged Hoover to provide a clear explanation to voters.
Canton sees a prosperous six months for auto dealers with 26 dealers reporting stronger sales than a year ago. Charles Jamieson of the Canton Automobile Dealers Association says sales records are being broken, employment is steady, and the outlook for 1928 remains bright as auto industry boosts local factories, rail workers, and suppliers.

Graham P. Hunt leads Cyrus Locher by 1,127 votes in the Democratic short term senatorial race based on complete unofficial returns from Tuesday's primary. Hunt has 94,345 votes to Locher's 93,218, with official results pending certification by the Secretary of State.
Miss Lucille Brenham, an American, travels with 10 Soviet explorers into Svanetian mountains. She arrived with a delegation led by Prof. John Dewey and serves as secretary of the American section of the Soviet Society for Cultural Relations With Foreign Countries.
The tropical storm sweeping Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia caused river flooding across four states with at least 11 deaths. Names included A Krafft and Jesse Dove in Virginia, Ellis Effler in North Carolina, and others near Hickory and Ariel Mills. Safety hinged on dams as rail and highway travel deteriorated and bridges were washed away.
Detroit August 17. Ford announces plans to triple production of tri motor airplanes. Current schedule is one plane per week after recent orders forced increases from two per month last May. A tri motor plane costs about 50000 dollars.
