Anthracite operators and miners plan peace talks in Philadelphia to end a twenty week strike costing nearly 100 million in wages. The session aims to test lines, with arbitration rejected and government seizure fears looming, while signs point to a possible coal peace by week’s end.
J Milton of Pittsburgh resumes grand president duties at the F O P meeting held at the Courtland hotel. Other officers re elected include H F Johnson Erie grand vice president and H P Finch Steubenville grand secretary. Additional officers named cover Pittsburgh Erie Reading Scranton Canton Fort Wayne and Alliance for next term. Convention set for August with delegates and wives dining at Alliance Country Club.
Partly cloudy conditions and near eighty degrees forecast for Friday in Ohio with warm daytime temps. A big festival is advertised at Louisville and St. Louis Orphanage rounds Saturday night August 19. An evangelist advertises nightly sermons at Forest and 9th Street SW at 7:45 p.m.
In Cincinnati James Stafford aged five died at city hospital from a cerebral infection after suffering a broken arm. He would not reveal how or where the injury occurred. Parents reported a fall. An inquest is scheduled for Thursday.
Simplicity and restraint marked the funeral of Lord Northcliffe at Westminster Abbey followed by burial at St Marylebone cemetery. A vast crowd lined streets as floral tributes concealed the coffin while police kept order. The ceremony featured a vested choir and dim light from stained glass. The procession included dignitaries and military officers in scarlet uniforms.
Joseph Richmond, 24, son of Mrs. William Giberson of Lakehurst, is jailed in Tom's River awaiting murder charges. Detectives report new clues and a possible arrest of a suspected accomplice. The case centers on a hospitalbed shooting of Giberson, with wife Mrs. Giberson recounting a home invasion and a funeral held for the victim.
State's Attorney Rowley announced no interference with the Dempsey Brennan fight set for Labor Day in Michigan City. He noted only reformers from outside Indiana protested, with no local complaints received. A separate fire damaged the Elk Grand theater in Bellaire, injuring city sanitary officer John Neal during the blaze fight.
A dynamite blast damaged the west span of the Niagara Falls rail bridge used by the International Railway company. The explosion lifted ties and rails but the wall held, a police clueless in the street car strike at the Falls. Patrolman Henry Frommert was first on the scene halting incoming cars. The attack marks violence amid the strike.
Washington Aug. 17 Detroit was placed within the standard eastern time zone in an order issued today by the interstate commerce commission The commission said it was not practicable to require railroads operating out of Detroit to break their time more than at present and no changes in their operating standard will be made The order will become effective at 2 a m August 27 1922
Reports from Moscow say Enver Pasha, the prominent Turkish figure who pushed Turkey into the war with the Central Powers, was killed in combat with Soviet troops near Bokhara. The dispatches confirm his death in battle.
A refined radio program airs Thursday at eight from Station WWE of the Daily News featuring contralto Miss Ruth Sponseller and tenor Mr. Gaetano Manno with organist Mrs. Henry W. Hageman. Sponseller recently completed ten weeks with a chautauqua tour and has Oberlin and Northwestern credentials. Manno studied in Palermo.
The Stark County American Legion council met Wednesday night to discuss county posts plans for the Department convention in Dayton on September 11 and 12. Nearly all Stark posts were represented and county secretary J. R. Cowgill said full post representation is expected at the Dayton meeting.
Washington, Aug. 17. The French government orders M. Jean Parmetier, head of the French debt commission to America, to return to France immediately. The summons reportedly comes from President Poincare amid a deadlock between Britain and France over reparations and war loans.
Windsor Ont Aug 17 Forty persons were injured when a freight car being switched at the Canadian Ford plant collided with a Windsor Tecumseh interurban on East Sandwich street Ford City. Many victims were gashed by glass and some may die. the street car toppled from its tracks and occupants were spilled into the street.

Negotiations ended Thursday with Henry Ford's Detroit Toledo and Ironton railroad taking over the Toledo and Detroit railroad once known as the Toledo Ann Arbor and Jackson line. Gov Groesbeck and S Applebaum led out of town stockholders in quiet talks. The line runs via Petersburg Michigan and DT&I gains right of way between Wassoon and Dundee connecting to the TOledo and Detroit. Ford reportedly secured 100 acres near the DT&I roundhouse for development. Officials refused to comment.
In Waraw today during Polish aerial maneuvers at Putzig a pilot accidentally dropped a bomb among 800 spectators, killing ten and wounding fifty. The incident occurred as military exercises unfolded, highlighting the dangers of wartime demonstrations.
State Rep C. C. Crabbe of London filed an expense account showing 1545.50 spent in his pre primary campaign for the Republican nomination for attorney general. The filing was with the secretary of State Smith today. Ady.
Ten year old Torrey Thilsberg narrowly escaped death when Freddie Spiegel eleven, son of former Judge Arthur Spiegel and grandson of ex mayor Spiegel, struck him in the neck with a glass shard during a crowd of boys playing war. The missile severed an artery and the child was rushed to the hospital where doctors saved his life. His condition remains serious due to blood loss.
Robert Hively aged 18 died at Alliance City hospital after being struck by an automobile. He was dragged 25 feet. Carl Lettus, 11, with him, was knocked down but bruised. Maximo driver Harry Gulling was jailed as coroner T C McQuate investigated the incident. The car traveled about 30 mph and could not stop within 60 feet of the scene. Robert was the son of Mr and Mrs C J Hively.
Funeral plans for T. Ross Kepler 53? are being made by his parents after he shot himself in a Chicago apartment lobby. The body will be brought to Canton for funeral services likely Saturday. Kepler leaves three brothers Ralph Ray Carl a sister Margaret and two younger sisters plus parents and other relatives. He had been jilted by Olga Stobbe a telephone operator.
Edward Black, a Black man of 914 Lafayette at SH, died in Mercy hospital from gunshot wounds attributed by police to his brother in law, Charles Brown of 1117 Rexto SE. The shooting happened Tuesday night at Black's home after an argument. Brown fled and remained at large Thursday. Funeral set for 2 p.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Harris officiating. He is survived by his wife.
The Pennsylvania Railroad Company asked the Interstate Commerce Commission for authority to lease for 999 years the railroad and property of several lines including the Toledo Columbus and Ohio Railroad Cleveland Akron and Cincinnati and others plus the Louisville Bridge and Terminal Company railway as part of unifying its system.

A Canton unit of the 145th Infantry, Company C, is scheduled to break camp at Cadiz Thursday morning and travel home the same day.
