A fierce storm battered New York and New Jersey with lightning striking over 100 buildings and flooding subways. Three people died including a 15 year old, and 60 others were injured as trains stalled and traffic ground to a halt.
A federal investigation into Canton vice liquor and dope conditions is ordered by United States District Attorney A E Bernsteen. He plans a conspiracy case under the Volstead act and other federal laws linking underworld figures with Canton police. A conference with Judge Pontius and actions to remove the suspended chief are reported.
A powerful electrical storm drenched New Jersey and New York causing washouts and flooding. The Pennsylvania Railroad paused all trains on its New York division with tracks inundated. Emergency crews worked overnight and officials forecast resume by 9 a.m. at Broad Street station.
Cincinnati August 13 Howard Sasse age 19 of Elyria Ohio is in Gen ral hospital in serious condition with typhoid fever. He was found last night on the steps of a negro Baptist church by a policeman after arriving from Florida where he lost his savings and had not eaten for five days.
Safety Director Ed Barry ordered an investigation into the shooting of Ames Gardner an employee of An Bell Nail and Chaplet Co by Patrolman Adrian Vandrosek in Cleveland. Vandrosek says Gardner hurled nails at him after being haled and fled prompting two shots with one fatal hit.
New York police report Mia Rose Di Palo, 30, was found murdered at her Brooklyn residence. The discovery was made by her nine year old daughter Delia, and investigators say the victim was killed in her home.
Lincoln Ellsworth heir to 1 207 318 dollars per will of James W. Ellsworth. Ellsworth linked to Norge polar flight with Amundsen and colonel coal operator fortune. father died while Ellsworth was listed missing after his pole expedition attempt.
Baltimore August 13. Richard Reese Whittemore known as the Candy Kid faced execution with defiance as he stood in Maryland’s death chamber. He offered no apology or fear, smiling at the crowd and saying goodbye as a crowd of spectators watched the final moments.
At Manila on August 13 a loyalty themed banquet celebrated occupation day of Spanish war veterans. Guests of honor included Gov Gen Lord Wood Admiral Kotelle Gen Welgel Col Carmi A. Thompson and Emilio Aguinaldo with special envoy to the Philippines.
Fire of unknown origin destroyed a two story brick building in West Mansfield Ohio today. The Odd Fellows temple and D P Hathaway dry goods store occupied the building. Loss estimated at 12000 dollars, partly insured.
Grace McCormick, 13, died at Lima City Hospital after a coal stove exploded and her clothing caught fire while she was preparing her father's supper at the farm home ten miles southeast of Lima. Her sister, a trained nurse, tended her gravely burned body for an hour before she passed.
In New York on August 13 1926 General Motors faces the need to earn and pay seven dollars per share annually on 8 700 000 common shares plus dividends on preferred and debentures. President Sloan calls the outlook entirely satisfactory as GM pursues expansion and greater earnings driven by drivers of existing owners. Other car makers view GM's move as proof the business remains available to competitive brands.
The Army and Navy union department of Ohio will hold its 88th annual encampment in Canton on Saturday and Sunday. Sessions start at 10 AM in the O N A armory at Tuscarawas and Walnut. Mayor S M Swarts will welcome delegates. attendees come from Cincinnati Dayton Warren Alliance Akron Youngstown and Cleveland. Captain James G Graham of Canton is Ohio department commander. A Canton garrison meeting Friday at Army and Navy hall will finalize encampment plans.
In San Diego on August 13 an inquest opens into the death of H Everett Shipley alias Don McCrae former driver for Jackie Coogan. Shipley was found dead on the Coogan ranch after gunfire at the Coogan home last Tuesday morning left guard Joseph Block wounded. Detectives say Shipley took his own life to avoid charges of attempted murder.
Police are patrolling Cleveland streets amid the twenty three week painters strike. Officers with shotguns were told to shoot to kill if needed to curb window smashings shootings and fires. An incendiary blaze caused about 500 dollars of damage to a new two story home of John Carmasino. Four men in a car fired shots at nonunion workers staying at the Blackstone hotel. Union strike chair John Steel signaled willingness to negotiate with contractors and talks were expected later in the day to end the dispute.
In Bissingen Germany Gertrude Ederle ace channel swimmer arrives by car from Stuttgart and is greeted by a citywide procession. The mayor delivers a praise filled welcome calling her heroine of Swabian descent and she is embraced by her elderly mother at the Lamb Inn.
Aug 13 news reports Joe Razell, a Black man, rushed from a home with a blazing oil stove after a fuel tank exploded. He carried the stove into the yard to prevent a wider fire, earning praise from friends and neighbors.
Akron August 13. A bathing beauty without a suit raises a debate over art and indecency. Police enforcement of the indecent literature ban stalled as officials split on censoring magazines. Councilman Criner blasted police for inaction while authorities note no authority to censor objectionable magazines. City leaders plan calls to rally Anthony Comstock supporters.
Toledo police scour the city seeking a negro driver who allegedly kidnapped a white woman near Jefferson and Michigan. Patrolman Zielinski was hurt when the hijacked car door swung open and he was thrown to the pavement during the pursuit.
Total results from 10 of 14 counties show a tight GOP judge race in the fifth Ohio district. Crew leads Sherrick by more than 4 000 votes at noon with 17 298 to 13 161, while counties Morrow Knox Licking Holmes and Perry were still unreported and trends varied by county.
Somerville, Aug 13 The two men Henry de la B Carpender and Willie Stevens were held in Somerville jail after arrest for the Half Mills slaying in the crabapple tree mystery. Bail was denied. Mrs Jane Gibson the pig woman will testify along with Mrs Eleanor Mills as the accusers. An additional arrest was expected.
President Coolidge approves two major air routes. The Transcontinental will run from New York to the Pacific coast with Los Angeles and San Francisco as termini. The Southwestern will connect Chicago with Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas.
Aug 13 in Columbus. Painters Alex McKenzie aged 41 and Robert Simpson aged 29 were hospitalized with serious back and limb injuries after a 15 foot fall from a scaffold while working on the agricultural building at the state fairgrounds.
Fire Chief R. Mesnar investigated an incendiary blaze at 811 Market Street around 11 39 Friday night. Two men seen fleeing prompted plans to prosecute the fruit company of Louis Sofroff owned by S S Kurtz. A prior similar attempt occurred the previous Sunday.
J. H. Hill at 1213 5th SW was fined 100 dollars and costs for liquor law violation. W. S. Ripley of 1031 Dartmouth SW was fined 15 dollars and costs for speeding. All other cases were continued.
District Attorney A. E. Bernsteen and Prosecutor C. B. McClintock conferred in Cleveland on the Canton murder of Don R. Mellett and the city-wide vice crackdown. Bernsteen provided murder details while McClintock outlined county aid for the grand jury probe and evidence collection.
