Washington reports fast modern destroyers patrol with expert gunnery to curb submarine attacks. Admiral Sims says destroyers’ high speed and zigzag courses keep subs near base, saving hundreds of seamen and disrupting German torpedo actions.
Howard A. Ferrall, city sinking fund secretary, helped two Italian men file alien resident exemptions and seek U S citizenship. He urged them to serve. they agreed to try, later passing the draft board exam and becoming eligible for military service.
Fighting on the western front reports heavy battles from Flanders to Champagne. British and French forces press toward Roulers with long range shelling as German attacks fail and inflict heavy losses. In Romania's front, Austro German troops try to pierce Russo Romanian lines while Russian and Romanian forces resist strongly near the Sereth river.

Angelo Pirolizzi a private in Co C was sentenced to six months in the workhouse by Police Judge Quinn on a charge of assault and battery. He threw a brick at an auto mobile driver in anger and struck seven year old Diana Gamble 1312 Cherry av SE seriously injuring her the assault occurred Friday.
London reports that additional Japanese units have joined entente forces in Europe. It may be the first official confirmation of Japanese troops fighting on the western front, following prior rumors that Japanese warships arrived at a French port and convoyed transports.
