History of Ohio medical licensing law in 1813
In 1813 Ohio enacted the first medical practice law creating districts and a board of examiners. Licenses were required for physicians and surgeons with character checks and exams on surgery materia medica chemistry and practice. Penalties for practicing without a license ranged from six to seventy dollars with portions awarded to reporters and the examining board.
