The Brooklyn transit shutdown ends as a settlement is reached at a conference in Judge Mayer's chambers. Receiver Lindley Garrison agrees to recognize the Amalgamated Association if at least half of employees join by midnight August 9. A three member wage and hours panel will be formed with appointments by the receiver, the union, and a third chosen by both.
Mayor Charles E. Poorman suspended Chief N. Riblet after a Daily News report that six downtown saloons were selling intoxicants. Hamaker will run the department temporarily as Riblet’s status is disputed and delivery of the order proceeded. Riblet, a 30 year veteran, did not comment.
An article in the Daily News exposes an illicit liquor network near city hall and four linked prostitution venues. It names Eve Cafe, Stark Cafe, Mathekeller Grill, and a Kesay Second Street room as hubs where alcohol and vice intersect while police say evidence is hard to obtain due to officer familiarity with suspects. In St Paul the railway shopmen pressed for higher wages as Northwest roads warned of a complete shutdown within a week. Unions voted to stay on strike while merchants reported delayed shipments and embargoes on some goods. Officials blamed inaction for the stalemate.
