Canton's polit ical factions held rival rallies Friday after a first primary battle. Republican Curtis faced anti Curtis speakers including mayoral supporters and W Brown allies, denouncing the current administration and urging reelection opposition.
Councilman E W Brown condemned Mayor C C Curtis for lax law enforcement and failure to cooperate with the legislature. He spoke at Hartford School during a Republican meeting applauded by supporters and urged voters to choose a different chief executive. Other mayoral candidates Vinton I Stansberry W H Hudson and Bert H Beadle also spoke, pledging their platforms.
Mayor C. C. Curtis and Safety Director Harry M. Kimbel defended their administration at a Republican mass meeting in 5th St SE hall Fourth ward. They branded the Men’s Federation of Bible Classes as political enemies and offered a $1,000 reward for evidence of discrepancies in a $29,000 traffic light contract awarded by the board of control.
United Press reports nearly a thousand firefighters battled wildfires across Washington Oregon and Idaho threatening millions of acres of virgin timber and irrigation systems. The Wenatchee Valley and Rainier foothills face heavy losses as power outages and travel disruption worsen under the blaze.
Deputies raided homes and found liquor including 20 gallons of moonshine whisky at the home of Andrew Thomas between Navarre and Justus. Arthur Little faced charges for transporting liquor. Eaton Ohio August 9 Joseph Edelman in custody in New York confessed to the December 8 1928 slaying of Dr Horatio Silver aged 58 during a home robbery. Marshal Willard Armstrong said Edelman would be sent to New York tonight to face charges. It was unclear if Edelman claimed responsibility for Mrs Silver’s death.

One man was killed and eight injured in a tanker explosion aboard the William E. Rockefeller at Pier 6 Standard Oil. The fire sent flames toward Staten Island as crew members were rescued. The dead man, John Ward, watchman, was found near the tanker and taken to the Bayonne morgue.
