Nation bids farewell as funeral train carries the disabled president to Washington. The machine of federal government remains idle until after the funeral Friday as crowds gather to see him enter the White House and begin duties as the 30th president.
Warren G. Harding is mourned as Calvin Coolidge formally assumes the presidency. The new president plans a nation wide day of mourning Aug 10 while arranging funeral ceremonies for Harding, whose body travels by train toward Washington with Mrs. Harding aboard the Superba.
Thomas Garfield, 22, restaurant employer, is held to the grand jury under $500 bond on a charge of passing worthless checks. His wife, 17, was released from a charge of issuing checks without funds after paying two checks totaling $40.80.
Raids by federal prohibition officers on river camps near Powhatan were not as successful as hoped. A rider on horseback warned campers of approaching sleuths, mimicking the Paul Revere legend as he sped between sites.
