Cape Gris Nez France August 3 Olaf Farstadt quits his English Channel swim after nine hours and 29 minutes due to heavy seas and rain. He had waited in Calais for a steamer when Oslo police extended his leave and supporters funded expenses. Farstadt slept, then tried again but withdrew as tide shifted. Clarabelle Barrett and Dr George Brewster also abandoned attempts within 36 hours.

Two Die After Car-Struck by Train at Young Ave Crossing
Frank Evans 69 and his son-in-law Sam Serong 53 of Canton were killed or fatally injured Monday after their car was struck by a Wheeling and Lake Erie passenger train at the Young avenue NE crossing. Evans died en route to Mercy hospital. Serong died later that night. Evans, an elevator operator at the courthouse, and Serong, a county surveyor, were active in local churches and unions. Funeral plans set for Wednesday at the 1311 St. Elmo Ave NE home.
