Deutschland Eludes Warships Under Cover of Night

In Norfolk Virginia on August 3 the German submarine Deutschland slipped away at dawn after remaining hidden near the Virginia capes. Allied ships including British and French squadrons pursued but failed to catch her as she headed toward the Atlantic. Captain Hinsch predicted Bremen will arrive safely and that German vigilance would prevail.

Brave Irishman Casement Hanged for Treason at Pentonville

London August 3 Roger Casement was executed for high treason at Pentonville prison. The long-expected hanging drew Irish mourners who prayed as the bell tolled. A request to bury the body outside the yard was denied. officials testified Casement showed no insanity.

Old Resident Dies in Massillon Home at 72

Mrs. Janice Roberts Beatty, seventy two, of 1307 East Main Street, widow of Henry Beatty who ran a shipping business with a grocery, died Wednesday night in the same house where the couple moved forty years ago. Death followed an internal disorder after a period of illness. Relatives were at bedside as her condition worsened until death.

Frances Lehman, eight, began washing for her mother after learning her husband William J. Lehman of 612 Second St NW lay near death in an Atlantic City hotel.
