Britain and France mobilize amid escalating tension. France readies proclamation against Germany while Russia and Germany clash on the Prussian border. Britain’s cabinet debates intervention as martial law spreads and trains fill with reserves.
The interstate commerce commission on August 1 granted a five percent rise in freight rates across all classes and most commodities for eastern official lines east of the Mississippi and north of the Ohio. Midwest roads in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and nearby states stand to gain an estimated 15 to 30 million dollars annually. Trunk lines in the east and New England were not granted increases.
