Canton Illinois faces plant shutdowns and possible food and fertilizer shortages as 400 yardmen join a broad strike. Berger Manufacturing plans major layoffs while Ohio Power cuts supply forcing production losses. Rail traffic and other plants may halt, threatening millions in losses. Labor disputes spark fear of city power cuts and economic disruption.
Superior Sheet Steel Co of Canton announces a capital increase from 2 million to 4 million to build a large jobbing mill for heavy blue annealed steel and expand the plant west of Louisville. A stockholders meeting is set for May 18 to approve the plan as construction proceeds and four mills are expected to be operating by July.
Dispatches from the Turco frontier claim Mustapha Kemal Pasha ordered deportations of foreigners and Christians as a new Turkish nationalist policy spreads. Reports also note Armenian residents of Baku being moved amid unrest in Karabagh and surrounding districts.
United Alley reduces output to 30 percent and Berger Manufacturing shuts a mill laying off half its work force. Heating at downtown offices may cease, with food shortages rising. Col. Harry Fuller thirty one foreman at United Furnace Co succumbed to coal dust after slipping into a bin of pulverized coal Friday night at the plant. Survived by wife Amy and four children Gertrude Leona Robert Dora Jane. three brothers Charlies William Fred and his Oregon mother. Funeral plans pending communication with Oregon. Body held at Whittier funeral home.
Police Chief Gillen said Jack Blaz confessed to the murder of Matej Oltean who was shot at his home after a quarrel over a girl. Three other men are under arrest for alleged complicity. Police allege Blaz threatened revenge and fired the fatal shot.
In Columbus on April 17 the weights and measures department announced a campaign against filling stations using crooked measures. The emergency board granted an application for extra inspectors to investigate the stations.
Federal agents pressed the meat profiteering case with two arrests already made for selling meats at excessive prices. Harry G. Mills of Armour and Company in Brooklyn and William Cleary of Swift and Company were released on $2500 bail after arrest under the Lever Act.

New York April 17 Brokers who borrowed Stutz Motor stock to sell short face a Monday return deadline set by Allan A. Kigan. Ryan, main Stutz stockholder and chairman, warned he may buy in the open market if brokers do not return shares. Stutz sold at 700 a share on the curb market, 600 above the initial corner price, with shorts seeking settlement around 1000 a share.
The Ohio State Telephone Company announces the next directory going to press on Monday April 19. Pay again for new listings and display advertising must be made on or before this date. Cooperation to this end is solicited.

Berlin April 16. An inquiry is under way into three Reichswehr officers arrested on orders from Minister Gessler for plotting a nationalist Bolshevik anti government movement. Captain von Viebahn says they sought agreement with communist leaders for surrender of arms to radical workers. The communists were later arrested and detained as the inquiry continues.
A Pittsburgh man identified as James Warren Kilpatrick 25 died from injuries after driving his car into an Erie passenger train at Randall Cleveland. Kilpatrick was among several chauffeurs transporting cars to Pittsburgh for a Cleveland automobile concern.
