The flag was illuminated at night by a large electric light as part of a noon patriotic meeting with talks from the superintendent and foremen.
Two women visited the army recruiting office at 119 Tuscarawas Street East on a Saturday morning and asked Corporal William Braziel to enlist them in the Red Cross. He said enlistments could not be accepted, and the pair left stating they would seek another way to serve.
Robert MacKenzie of 803 Cleveland Ave NW filed a passport application with the clerk of courts on Saturday to travel to France as an ambulance driver with the French army. The converted German cruiser Comerant, interned at Guam since December 1914, refused to surrender to U S forces and was blown up by her officers. Two warrant officers and five enlisted men were killed. twenty officers and twenty one men were captured. The vessel, 6000 tons, originated as a Russian ship bought by Germany before World War I. The captain had interned to avoid capture by British and Japanese fleets.
In Boston on April 7 the yacht Sparrow Hawk was seized by U S naval authorities aboard the patrol boat Little after a harbor chase. Three men aboard were detained. one is identified as German and the other two as Swedes. The yacht was towed to Long Wharf and is under investigation.
