Canton plans a mass meeting at the Auditorium to launch the third Liberty Loan drive. George D. Harter Bank subscribes to the loan and officials urge wide participation, with citywide observances and posters promoting the $200,000 subscription and campaign start.
H Mayhugh announces Monday start for 50 laborers to join shipyards. J Sherlock orders immediate enlistment at Canton employment office in City Hall basement. Wages are $3.85 for ten hours with travel by air to Cleveland. Only Americans accepted. white and colored laborers welcome. Physical exams required upon arrival in Cleveland.

Absalom Kitt, 90, Canton’s first tailor and a founder of the Canton YMCA, died Friday afternoon at Massillon State Hospital after a long illness. Services will be held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at First M. E. Church with Rev. T. Wallis Grose officiating. Burial in Westlawn cemetery. He was born August 2, 1827, learned tailoring, opened Cadiz shop in 1849, moved to Canton in 1851, and led a long tailoring career. He leaves three sons, Howard, Millard of New York, and E. P. of San Francisco.
The United States moves to a new Liberty loan drive as the third campaign opens nationwide with Wilson leading the push. Officials predict billions in war money will be subscribed over 28 days as towns stage ceremonies and leaders rally support. Bonds mature in 1918 with 4 1/4 percent rate and semiannual interest, while a national push features stars like Pickford Dressler Chaplin Fairbanks and boy scouts distributing posters and bells to encourage subscriptions.
United Press reports that Germany has built a financing system extending to Austria Bulgaria and Turkey to back war needs. Germany could bankrupt those countries by canceling obligations or refuse to honor debts. Bulgarian profits from German purchases have grown, while fear of repudiation maintains Berlin's control over its allies.

The Massillon board of education abolished German study today after a Friday night meeting. Notice states prices at Canton and Acme Wet Wash Laundries rise starting Monday April 8. Base charge 17 pounds set at 85 cents with 5 cents for each additional pound. Local patrons urged to plan ahead for the new rates.

The plan, pushed by the Ohio War Savings committee, would have the auditor, treasurer, and clerk issue warrants for stamp payments and the treasurer supply stamps in place of cash. County officials welcomed the idea as a patriotic investment and possible incentive for witnesses to participate. A Stark county War Savings speakers division formed, led by Attorney Walter Ruff, with meetings held across rural locales. Local firms began gifting thrift stamps to employees, including the Iron-Clad Mantle Company and Brown Lumber Company, as part of a broader adoption effort.
British and French units report heavy fighting along the Somme and Ancre corridors near Amiens, Albert, and Corbie with Allied counterattacks reclaiming positions. German forces launch raids from Seuzey to Verdun front, while Haig notes repulsed assaults and 120 prisoners taken near Gommecourt.
A four year old boy, left at the home of Mr and Mrs Wilson 413 Walnut NE, by a woman friend who did not return, shows no distress for his parents and calls the couple papa and mamma. Mrs Wilson plans to adopt if the mother does not return. The woman reportedly has two other children.
Columbus April 6. First movement of Ohio selects to camp under the second draft will occur during a five day period beginning April 26. Quotas will be provided to local boards by April 11. White men for general service go to Camp Sherman 8442, to Camp Mead Maryland 1329. Colored men for general service go to Camp Sherman 531. Those engaged in planting crops will not be sent now. A Masonic lodge communication is set for tonight at 7 p.m.
Four year old Alvin Shaidnagle, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Shaidnagle, fell from a playing line along the Ohio canal in Massillon Friday afternoon and drowned. Neighbors cried out for help, and Edward Critchfield jumped into the canal to retrieve the body. A pulmator was used for an hour without success.

Washington April 6 Allied military observers say French and British troops at Amiens will hold the line against Roche with strong defenses. They warn the loss of Amiens would threaten vital rail lines and supply routes, prompting a intensified Allied defense and possible use of reserve forces. Fresh American strength is being added to aid the effort.
The War Trade Board announced that Sweden will charter 100000 tons of shipping to the United States under a temporary trade agreement. Negotiations continue for a permanent war agreement to secure additional tonnage in exchange for food and war materials. Some ships may move immediately, though only part of the 100000 tons has been turned over.
