Boosters Plan Large Parade Next Week in Canon City

Canon City Boosters decide at Saturday meeting to stage a big parade Monday night with 500 men in line. Forming at Third and Main, parade may move to the park near the Denver Rio Grande station if weather permits. Plans also set for Booster excursion to Cripple Creek Colorado Springs and Pueblo.

Santa Fe Railroad Doing Big Business

The Santa Fe Railroad's business has grown marvelously due to coal mining nearby and expanding smelting interests. In 1905 Canon City posted large gains along the line from Chicago to San Francisco, with continued marked increases since then. The local workforce has been insufficient to meet demand.

Making Good Roads in East Canon

East Canon residents improve public roads with graded streets and sand to create smooth driveways. About 350 wagon loads of sand have been spread on Main Street from Orchard Avenue to the railroad crossing, enhancing drainage and surface quality. Public spirit here could inspire other communities nearby.

Steel frame rises for Florence and Cripple Creek shops

The Florence and Cripple Creek railroad shops gain a steel framework now in place with sides and roofing due Friday from Eastern makers. Erected by Pueblo Bridge company, the roof and walls will be added by railroad workers. Equipment orders are big but not yet delivered. The shops promise top equipment and efficiency for the state.

Canon City receives two advertisement pages in the Denver and Rio Grande railroad Red Book for April. Ten thousand copies will be distributed across the United States, Canada and Great Britain. Last year Canon City had one page, a generous share. The rail company doubled Canon City’s space recognizing its growing importance and prospects. D W Ross of the Canon City Merchants Association is preparing the copy.

The Y M C A Star Course concluded with Katherine Ridgeway's concert at First Methodist Church drawing a full audience. Seven high quality entertainments were offered at a two dollar season ticket, usually yielding a small surplus to support future programs.

The Katherine Ridgeway Concert company at the First Methodist church closed the Y M C A Star entertainment course for the year amid severe cold. Despite a sore throat and poor condition, Ridgeway delivered graceful readings amid warm audience applause. Fay La Grange and Donald Chalmers contributed as pianist and baritone, pairing for a pleasing program.

A Social event hosted by the Woman's Relief Corps and Ladies of the G. A. R. drew over 250 attendees. Mrs. Nellie P. Weston chaired the program featuring piano and violin duets, addresses with welcome and responses, a piano solo by B. F. Rockafellow, and vocal and musical performances. The evening closed with a grand march and additional music.

A communal gathering featured a chorus of America by the children followed by a lavish luncheon. Ladies speakers praised veteran G A R comrades with eloquent remarks and post representatives voiced strong affirmations of respect and esteem.

Whitney Brothers Best Entertainer in Star Course Poll

At a Katherine Concert company event in First Methodist church audience members filled cards rating Star Course numbers. Whitney Brothers Quartette led the standings followed by Katherine Ridgeway Concert, Dr. Greene, Gen. Sweeney, Eldridge, the impersonator, and Outcault of Buster Brown fame. Twenty eight acts were solicited for next year, from the Boston Symphony club to a William Jennings Bryan lecture.

Guests later played 500 at the entertainers’ home, a memorable evening noted for its enjoyment and sociability.
