Senate committee investigating Australian television production proposed a national television council. The report tabled in the Senate criticises commercial and national stations programmes and urges sweeping changes in present programming patterns.
A committee urges a quota system to boost Australian produced television drama and recommends a seven member council. It calls for a loan-subsidy scheme, national research program, and awards to Australian writers and artists. The report critiques imported content and ABC spending, and notes the need for public interest in Australian culture.
Charges of conspiracy against two men related to Commonwealth flats were dismissed. Judge noted the Crown failed to prove a prima facie case against Emmanuel Makaratzis and Desmond Bird. Defence argued no evidence of a joint agreement. Prosecution claimed some witnesses sought help from Makaratzis for flats. one witness received keys from him rather than the Housing Branch. Rescue efforts for three miners trapped 300 feet underground progressed to the halfway point as a second drill opened a reserve shaft. Mine director Herr Rudolf Stein said shipments of food will continue, and the men reported staying calm via radio while darkness lasted.
Affected workers remain unaware that the flood killed 40 percent of their colleagues on Thursday. Despite the high pressure air pocket, the trapped men are reported well and in good spirits as rescue efforts continue.
A man was found dead in a car parked in a lonely pine plantation on Cotter Road near Mount Stromlo, about six miles from Canberra. Police say the body had been dead for weeks and investigators led by Sgt C G Lomax have not identified the deceased. The car, rubber exhaust tube still attached, was found around 12 40 p.m. by Sgt Tilden of the Commonwealth police.
In a heated defence debate Sir Robert Menzies and Mr Fairbairn defend purchasing the American TFX bomber over the TSR2. They claim the TFX offers greater speed range heavier load, better electronics, and easier takeoff from shorter runways. The deal is praised as financially advantageous and vital to Australia’s defence.
A select committee report states the new Parliament House may not be ready for 10 to 12 years. It urges extensions on the House of Representatives side due to inadequate member and minister offices and substandard Hansard staff facilities. The panel says minor remodelling cannot fix the problem and extensions should not affect plans for the new building.
Barbara Mortimer of Hemmant Street O Connor, ten, sustained a fractured skull when her bicycle collided with a panel van at Hemmant Street and Cockle Street yesterday about 4 pm. She was taken by ambulance to the Community Hospital in serious condition.
