F B S agents ended seven months of around the clock work with the arrest of an American electronics engineer and a Russian chauffeur on espionage charges near an old railway station in Englewood New Jersey. Two Russian diplomats with the Soviet mission to the United Nations were detained but freed due to diplomatic immunity.
John William Butenko and Igor A. Ivanov faced federal charges for delivering information related to U S national defense. Bail set at 100000 dollars each. both pleaded not guilty. The trio involved a Soviet mission official and a Paramus New Jersey contractor linked to a sensitive air force contract.
The Joint Coal Board warned in Parliament that oil refining could threaten Australian coal in years ahead especially if Australia markets much of its furnace oil abroad. The board cited NSW efficiency low head costs and bold marketing as defense, noting oil competition remains a global issue eroding coal markets where oil has no intrinsic advantage.
Two refractor telescopes, a 40 inch and a 16 inch, imported from the United States are due in Sydney on December 24. A Goulburn woman Mrs. Alethea Smith 48 of Avoca Street has donated 300 square inches of her skin to her 15 year old son Raymond who is badly burned. Ray mond was admitted to St. Vincent's Hospital six weeks ago with third degree burns to about half his body from a garage explosion in Goulburn.
