Australia will not veto Britain joining the Common Market but will reserve judgment on terms. Prime Minister Menzies warned Britain must not enter on terms that hurt British or European markets. He pledged to keep fight to safeguard markets and profits.
Mr Menzies reported to the House on Prime Ministers Conference talks in London. He warned Britain’s entry and the Six’s terms could endanger Australia’s European market access while stressing a balanced approach to safeguard export interests and Britain’s prosperity.
Mr Menzies signaled that Britain must engage with the global community and urged a concerted Europe for peace and prosperity. He noted only wheat talks so far with Australia moving on meat dairy fruit sugar and metals in discussions. Continued on page.
Twelve men from the yacht Tuaikaea Pau survived three months on a reef off Tonga before rescue. A Royal New Zealand Air Force Sunderland aircraft plucked them from the water, delivering food and water. three died during the ordeal.
A barking dog blamed for a road accident in Red Hill sent four year old James Michael Kellar of Cygnet Crescent Red Hill onto the road just before 7.30 pm. He was hit by a car driven by Mrs. Elizabeth Peters of Caley Place Narrabundah Heights. He was admitted to Community Hospital with a broken right leg and shock. His condition is reported as satisfactory.
Three Company 3 R N S W R members received Skill at Arms prizes on Monday night for 1961/62. Winners R. S. Fitzgerald topped the rifle shots, Cpl. J. Pike led the L M G shots, and L/ Cpl. K. Bateup won as the O M C shot, with the prizes given for efficiency and marksman skill during the training year.
Pro-Communist guerrillas downed a U.S. Air Force T-28 fighter about 270 miles northeast of Saigon during a cover patrol over the wreckage of an L-28 observation plane that crashed the previous day. The T-28 pilot was rescued and hospitalized. an American officer and two other servicemen were killed in the L-28 crash.
The Queensland parliament swore in Senator White-Side of the Labour party to succeed the late Senator Poulter. The ceremony was noted as one of the quietest Senate take‑ups on record.
Mr J Fraser in the House of Representatives blamed the NCDC for shortages and delays in Canberra housing. He said current three and two bedroom homes wait times exceed three years and accused expenditure cuts of lowering size and quality while praising the Lakes scheme in the developing city.
The National Capital Development Commission awarded a 131580 contract for engineering services to Leighton Contractors Ply. Ltd. for 245 new blocks built between Bradford and Atherton Streets, north of Downer School. Completion is due in 35 weeks.
Two U S Air Force captains died when a B57 crashed after takeoff from Laverton on September 17. The aircraft went into Bass Strait near Lorne and Aireys Inlet, exploding as it sank. A fisherman reported seeing no survivors as rescue efforts began.
