The U S Atomic Commission says Russia has now conducted 28 nuclear tests since September 1. The United States readies a massive radio offensive in response to the Soviet testing surge.
London reports Prime Minister Macmillan warning Britain to avoid panic over radioiodine in milk from Russian nuclear tests. US and UK plans for response include broadcasts and warnings if iodine levels exceed acceptable limits. Krushchev admits the Soviet super bomb underestimated yield, prompting debate over scientists and future tests. Speculation grows over a neutron death ray bomb with no fallout.
An R.A.A.F. Sabre jet crashed into Darwin Harbour during a large postwar exercise. Pilot Officer D. Irvine, 22, of Murwillumbah Melbourne, was killed instantly. The jet exploded during bomber interceptor maneuvers as crash boats and a Hercules bomber investigated the area.
